*I use this lapdesk for my Dell Inspiron laptop, not a notebook. Purchased for around £16, from Amazon.
Since owning my laptop, I have always experienced over-heating when using it on my lap - as I'm sure many others have. It's not just that my laptop becomes noisy and slow, but the laptop gets to a temperature where it's uncomfortable to have it on my lap. And as I'm not one for sitting at my desk to use the internet, or write, or do whatever it is I need my laptop for, this isn't ideal!
My friend actually introduced me to this lapdesk, and after using hers I just had to get one myself. And I don't regret buying it at all!
Whether I'm sitting on the sofa, or sitting up late in bed, whether using my laptop to write coursework or to watch a film, I ALWAYS have my lapdesk. Why? Because:
1) I don't get a hot lap! Which, let's face it, is just annoying. One of the features advertised is the 'Heat-shielding design' that 'helps protect your body from notebook computer heat'. It does just that.
2) I suffer from bad circulation in my legs, and have quite a large varicose vein on the back of one of them, (would you believe I'm only early 20s!) so having anything remotely heavy on my lap causes quite a lot of discomfort. Since using the lapdesk, I've noticed that I don't get any discomfort in my legs - at least most of the time - when sitting with my laptop. I don't know whether it's the padding on the bottom of the lapdesk, or the way the weight is spread out, but something's happening there!
3) My laptop doesn't overheat - hurray! I'm sure most laptop uses will experience overheating when using there laptops either directly on their laps, or when placing them on a soft surface (such as carpet, sofa, bed etc). What the picture above doesn't show is that, included with the lapdesk are 4 rubber pads (about 5 mm thick) which you can stick on to the surface of the desk, and which allow air to circulate underneath your laptop or notebook. It has to be said that this is not as effective as one of the cooler fans you can buy, but for me it does the job. If you spend a lot of time playing games or watching videos, or running multiple applications, it might be worth getting the 'Logitech N100 Laptop/ Notebook Cooling Pad', which you can find on Amazon for about £30.
I honestly can't use my laptop now without the lapdesk! I've recommended it to friends and family (my grandma, in particular, is a big fan - she's recently had a hip replacement, and so finds it uncomfortable to sit at a desk or table when using her laptop. Using the lapdesk is much more practical for her, and makes computer use much less of a chore!)
The only downside I can see is that it may not offer good enough cooling for some people. But as I said, for me it makes a big difference (heat-wise) from just having my laptop on my lap.
Would definitely recommend.
I was tempted to buy this after reading topsy-turvy's excellent crowned review from 24th April. Because my health isn't good I spend most of my time at home. And much of that time is spent on my laptop - we are almost surgically attached. He (I'm sorry, he has a nickname, but there's only so much I'm prepared to share) is my lifeline to the outside world, to family and friends, to keeping my brain active and interested and entertained.
There are some occasions when I'm stuck in bed for a while, and it's on those occasions particularly that this lapdesk is going to be most useful. Up until now, I've either put up with getting very warm legs, or alternatively have placed my laptop on a breakfast tray. While that arrangement helps keep me cool, it is at quite a high level, and makes typing a bit of a strain. And I always seem to bash my shins when I'm clambering out from beneath it or trying to lift it away.
I had seen a few reviews of different lapdesks, and was in fact first tempted by one from Belkin.
However, once I saw the picture of the Logitech, and the fact that its base was padded, like that of a lap tray, I realised it might be more comfortable. To be honest, it also looked nicer too - slender, sleek and modern.
So, having done my research (thank you, topsyturvy!), I placed my order with Amazon on Monday 2nd May, as soon as I earned my very first voucher from Dooyoo. It was delivered late yesterday morning, Thursday 5th May, and I couldn't wait to open my parcel. It felt remarkably light (the lapdesk weighs just over 1kg), so I already knew that I would be able to shift it around easily when I needed to.
The base, the cushion part, is firm yet padded, and is encased in a futuristic-looking silver mesh. Underneath this cushion, and in the centre of the lapdesk, is a circular gap, which means that the area directly beneath my laptop will stay as cool as possible. The cushion arches down at the back, which gives a comfortable support while keeping that central space free. The top of the tray is white, which tones in beautifully with the silver mesh of the cushion. As the cushion curves down at the rear, the tray curves up slightly, which means that my laptop is set at a very gentle angle, perfect for my hands being in a comfortable typing position.
My laptop rests securely on the tray without slipping, as it has very good 'feet' at each corner. However, should this not be the case with you, the lapdesk comes provided with its own four feet that can be stuck on to hold your laptop or notebook in place. A template is provided for you to lay over the tray and position the feet in just the right spot.
I bought my lapdesk from Amazon, as I had the voucher from Dooyoo. It cost £16.21, and qualifies for free UK delivery. The RRP is £24.99, and I've seen a variety of prices available online. The only other company I've had any personal dealings with is 7dayshop.com, and they sell it for £16.77, again with free shipping. Their website states that the 'Angled riser positions your notebook to improve neck and leg comfort (when used in a seated position).' It is designed to accommodate a laptop of 'up to a 17" display'. My laptop is 15" and fits easily with space to each side. The 7dayshop website has some good pictures of the lapdesk, showing it from different angles.
I've given this five stars, and have marked the Quick Rating as excellent in each attribute. This obviously isn't the most technical piece of computer equipment in existence, so I've had to mark according to my own reactions.
I am thrilled to bits with my new acquisition. It looks sleek and modern, and is very light and very comfortable. Elegant and ergonomic at the same time, I think it's a very nicely designed piece of equipment, and it will be getting a lot of use in my house!
