I have been using Speck's cases for quite a while now. I originally had one on my white MacBook, and now I purchased this for my new MacBook. I have always been VERY happy with the quality of the Speck cases. This is relatively discrete but still is a hard case so protects the MacBook below.
The casing clicks in to place easily and without any hassle. I think it actually makes the MacBook look very slick (I have this one and also the same one in black). Everything gets covered properly except for the ports and sockets on the sides and so it gives the best protection for your MacBook.
Despite being my casing of choice, there are a couple of issues. The edges of the material seem to be splitting and a layer coming off, but this is only very slight and after a lot of wear. Additionally, the corners of the casing (which click into the MacBook) aren't very smooth and it would be much nicer flush it these were rounded off.
All in all, this is a product which is a must buy for someone who really wants to take care of their MacBook!
So I've had my macbook pro for a year and half, maybe more and its with me 24/7. It gets a real beating with me being a clumsy idiot! Its even fallen off a table! I nearly cried! Solution for a vulnerable little macbook; a hardcase! I looked on E-bay (because I'm a cheapskate!) and had bought one of the ones that come from China for my brothers macbook and it was really tacky and broke easily. I saw a case made by Speck (not a brand I had heard of) that someone was selling because they got the wrong size. I won the bid, buying the case for £14 which is a bargain when speck cases can be in the region of £30.
When I received it, it was great, the case has a nice texture to it and it is a really nice shade of purple. I like the way the apple logo glows through the case making it purple. I would have liked a case with the apple logo cut out but thats one of the prices you pay for quality! It fits onto my macbook perfectly and the bottom piece comes away really easily if your laptop gets too hot and you're worried about the plastic melting (its never melted on mine). The top piece is very hard to get off. Its been in place since I first put it on.
The instructions say that you should take them off to clean any dust from your laptop which I would do more often if I didn't have to get my mum to take the case off. I've had it for around 9 months and it is only just showing signs of wear and tear which is a credit to speck for the quality.
I highly recommend this case for macbook users everywhere to protect your machine and make it look funky at the same time. Its great and it does the job so well. I think that its well worth the money I paid for it and possibly worth the investment of paying full price for it.
I had accidentally dented my unibody Macbook Pro TWICE, once knocked a tumbler against the side of the screen and then later had a clip board fall off a shelf onto the top of the lid. I had only had the Macbook a few weeks at the time so I thought to myself "enough was enough". I'd decided that I would try to avoid further accidental damage to my precious (and first) Apple computer by investing in a Speck clear shell.
The shell comprises of two sections. One piece to protect the underside, and the other for the top. Each piece slots in and latches on to the Macbook so it's like they become part of the Macbook. Not too difficult to remove either should you need to remove the shell if you decide not to use it or if you Macbook needs hardware upgrades, repairs, etc.
As for the protection, the Macbook is protected in most places from further dents and scratches with the exception of the inside when the lid is open, the left side where all the ports and and the right side where the optical drive slot is (obviously, covering all of them would be bad design!) Don't know how well it would do against drops but I would rather drop the Mac with the Speck shell on than without it as it's an extra layer of protection.
The shell is approximately 2mm thick so it makes the Macbook Pro seem ever so slightly bigger. It also makes it seem a bit shinier because of the acrylic material. It may actually have improved the look of the device to some but all in all, I don't think the see-through shell spoils the Aluminium Macbook's elegant look that much. I would personally prefer the aluminium minus the clear acrylic but we can't have it all. However, the shell also comes in other colours like red / purple / black and is available for other models of Macbooks (e.g. Macbook Air) for those who fancy a colour change and don't like the acrylic over silver look.
Aside from making the Macbook a few millimetres thicker is that it adds about 300g to the weight of the device. I prefer my laptops to be light so that they're easier to carry around with me, so this isn't great but it's better than getting more scratches and dents on the fairly pricey laptop.
- See-through and clear so can still see the Apple logo on top of the lid
- Easy to set
- Doesn't obstruct the ports
- Comes in different colours.
- Adds 300g to the weight of the laptop
- Some people prefer the look of the Macbook Pro without cases
- Doesn't protect screen and keyboard area
The Macbook Pro is an expensive device but unfortunately it dents and scratches easily. The aluminium is pretty but seems to be made out of Papier-mâché! Having a slip case will protect the Macbook when it's not in use and in it's bag but when you need to use it, the Speck shell offers some extra protection against bumps and scratches.
For those whom like to keep their gadgets in immaculate condition (Keeping the device in good nick will help it retain its value for when you decide to sell it on later), I can highly recommend the Speck See-Thru Macbook Pro shell so long as you don't mind the extra weight. It's expensive at around £30 but the Macbook Pro is around £1,000 so £30 is worth the investment.

I can be a little careless at times (as I'm sure many others are). I recently bought a new macbook pro and want to make sure it stays shiney and in great condition for as long as possible after doing a lot of tedious searching my brother solved the problem and bought me this speck see through hard case. It's amazing other than protecting my laptop I really didn't want to change it's sophisticated silver appearance by putting a tacky pink cover on it! This gets five stars from me. It protects brilliantly and sometimes you can't even tell that it's on. I have the 13" laptop and the case fits perfectly. It really doesn't cost much and I can imagine using this for years to come. Even if I do end up damaging the case, I would rather buy another speck case than risk damaging my new laptop that is worth a lot more.
As I mentioned in another review, as soon as i bought my Macbook I decided to get as much protection as I could for it, to keep it in good condition and clean from dirt and scratches. I guess this is important for all laptops, but Apple ones are particularly expensive and good-looking, and the elegant casing is very easy to spoil with a few scratches.
As well as a keyboard cover and a couple of other bits and pieces, I needed to get a hard case for the exterior of the laptop. So, I decided to buy the
Speck SeeThru Hard Case, mainly to keep the laptop as safe as possible if it was ever dropped or anything. I have never regretted this purchase, and I have never used my Macbook without this case on it since I bought it.
The case is hard, and made of plastic. I believe it can come in many semi-transparent colours, but I chose to purchase the clear one to keep the originial look of my Macbook.
After putting the case onto the laptop, which only took a few seconds, I hardly even noticed it was there... Which is a good thing, of course! It doesn't add too much to the bulk of the laptop, and all the ports on the side and the disk tray are completely accessible.
There are also a lot of vents on the bottom of the case. I suppose these are to stop the Macbook from overheating, which could be a problem if the hot air can't escape.
Removing the case is a little tricky - the clips that hold it on are quite tight, but this is good as it means the case won't fall off. Taking it off isn't really an issue anyway, as it only needs to be done when you want to clean it.
This is an item that every Macbook owner should buy to protect their laptop!
One of the first things Mac owners want to do after firing up their new purchase is to protect it from scratches. MacBook, PowerBook and iPod owners from all corners of the globe (if only it were square) spend money on cases, skins and bags. Well, in the form of Speck Products 'See Thru' case, I think they are on to a possible winner here, so let's take a look.
This is a hard case, made of translucent or semi-translucent plastic and is available either completely transparent, or as reviewed here in red. The red is a very punchy colour and really looks superb.
The case itself comes supplied in two halves. You fit the top half first to the back of your screen, it just slips on and four small clips hold it in place. The bottom half is a little more tricky, with four clips securing the back, near the heat vents on the MacBook Pro. The back has to be put in place first, then the rest of the case is held on with two smaller clips. These small clips do not prevent the MacBook Pro from closing in the normal way, so you don't even notice they are there.
Once in place you have to be ready for the wow factor. It really shines and makes the MacBook Pro look even sexier than it did before. All of the ports remain accessible with the case on, nothing is obscured at all. It even made the screen/lid of the MacBook Pro feel more rigid, so may go someway toward preventing any warping in the future.
If you are worried about heat, there are plenty of vents on the bottom of the See Thru case, so no worries there. Removing the case, if you really need to is a bit worrying. I suppose the fear is that one of the little tabs will scratch the MacBook Pro casing, but fear not, so long as you are careful, the See Thru case can be easily removed, leaving no damage at all.
Everything about the See Thru case made me smile. The fit is spot on, the finish is excellent, no sharp edges and it makes your laptop look really great. The all important factor of protection is also addressed, any knocks or scratches will be taken by the See Thru instead of marking the silver finish to your MacBook Pro.
I can highly recommend this product at around the £20 to £25 mark... it makes sense to protect your investment.
