Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand
Advantages: Effective, quite nice to look at, great value.
Disadvantages: Shortish USB connection, cannot use on your lap.
My last laptop became a victim of overheating and after replacing the internal fan once already the inner heat ended up damaging other internal parts and I had to replace it. This made me very conscious of the damage which can be done to your laptop if it is not allowed to cool properly, this is only exacerbated if you use it on your lap continuously and prevent air from getting underneath the body of the laptop itself.
So, having acquired a new laptop I was determined to be more mindful of the heat being kicked out and try to ensure that the same thing did not happen again. I did not realise these kinds of external, stand type devices were available until I read a review of one on here but it seemed like a great investment for less than a tenner.
I paid £9.99 on Amazon for mine and use it on a table. It basically holds the laptop above the table and has a curve design which is quite aesthetic and clever, it means that the base of the laptop gets air circulated to it via the inbuilt fan which is powered by USB. The attachment is not too long but just about reaches from USB port to the device on my standard size laptop.
The whirring noise it makes is not too loud at all and actually I do not notice it after the first few minutes, in contrast it is noticeable that the inbuilt fan within my laptop does not kick in anywhere near as often and clearly is not as needed, this gives me peace of mind that using the stand is better for the maintenance of the laptop.
The one downside is that this cannot be used on your laptop and needs a stable hard surface but to be honest, if I am working from home or doing anything which requires concentration for any length of time then I tend to be sat at the table anyway as it is better for my back.
This is a great, simply solution to a common problem and looks pretty good to boot, it does not affect the way you use your laptop but elevates it gracefully and circulates air very well, it is well worth investing in if you work on a laptop for long periods of time.
Summary: A great idea for anyone who works frequently on a laptop.
