The Intel thermal solution XTS100H, this is a combination of a heat sink and fan and is designed to work on Intel i5 and i7 processors. This came nicely packaged in the box not much larger than the device itself, it was secured by pieces of polystyrene keeping the heat sink and fan from moving around in during delivery. The device itself looked exactly as it did on the website when I purchased it, all be it at first glance I was happy.
Installing the item was easy as all it required was to apply the thermal paste to the bottom, screw the heat sink to the motherboard and plug the fan in to the correct pins. If you ever get stuck during installation of such items you can always find nice installation videos on the Intel website, these are quite handy and are probably worth a watch previous to installing if you have any doubts. The fan has a blue LED on it which is a nice touch if you have a side window on your case otherwise it just seems kind of pointless, saying that though to get a good look of it I removed the side of my case when I switched it on and it did look cool.
The flashy blue light aside let's take a closer look at the device and its features. The fan has a speed between 800RPM - 2600RPM when needed it will speed up automatically, Intel promise that this will range between 20 dBA and 45 dBA in the noise level. I never tested the noise to check that this was correct but it was a pretty standard fan with matching noise level, when I had it running it wasn't a bother and I barely noticed the noise even when there wasn't any other sound in the room.
The heat sink has 3 copper pipes which will help to transfer all of the heat through the fan and away from the CPU, this does seem to work pretty well when I ran a monitoring program the fan was running at 2600 RPM keeping the CPU at an even 60 degrees. The heat sink does seem rather chunky and maybe unsightly (this explains the flashy blue light) but this has only one job and that's to protect your CPU, better to lose £25 than £100 right.
Overall I am really happy with this product and it can be picked up for an even £25 which isn't too bad all things considered, Intel also offer you a 3 year warranty so you have that piece of mind. Not forgetting the blue LED on the fan which would cost you extra on any other normal fan. This is a piece of hardware that I would trust to keep any expensive CPU running as long as possible, so for anyone out there looking to buy an Intel CPU with a LGA115x socket then I would certainly give this a go because it's better to be safe than sorry, and you may find that standard fans not be adequate enough to look after your expensive equipment.
