A cheap way to cool down

The new work station at my office in the classroom is situated right next to a very hot radiator that has a mind of its own. Even in really cold weather the heat coming from it, which we are not permitted to turn off or control, is of such a high temperature than I needed a fan. Instead of buying one of the expensive stand along fans I saw this at the very reasonable price of £3.99 and decided to buy it and to be honest its done a fantastic job. It connects via any usb port where the power is on which makes it ideal as I sit at a desk with a laptop. It comes in a stylish black design with a grey/white tip where the fan blades are located. The extension cord is around 30cm long and its made of a bendy flex meaning you can shape and style it to suit your needs. The first thing that certainly I noticed about this and was mildly concerned about was how little the blades were. I thought that surely the amount of air being circulated would be minimal. So when I plugged it in first time I was not expecting much at all. There is no installation at all you simply plug it in and away you go. The moment it kicked in I realised I was wrong and the blades pun so fast the air circulation was good. I really felt the difference as the fan cooled me down and made my "sat at my desk typing" experience more cooler. It really does provided a whack of air way beyond its size and I really believe this is , in terms of relative size, the most powerful fan I have used. The other plus side for me was the bendy flex which means I can twist and turn it into a suitable position till my heart is content. The usb connector is strong too meaning when I am turning it it doesn't come out. This bends also make it easy to store either in a drawer or a laptop case. Either way it's a ideal portable device and I imagine a relief on hot trains or other forms of transport. One more bonus to add is the lack of noise which comes from the device. This simply means that it doesn't distract either you or co-workers A mild hum is all that comes from it and if concentrating on work this is totally unnoticeable. Ideal device! Also on CIAO

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Ideal for a laptop, perhaps less practical for desktop PC's.

The weather is incredibly hot and sticky at the moment, which can make things uncomfortable , since I don't like being too hot . I have a rather excellent desktop fan, a Honeywell, which does a great job of stirring the air and creating a refreshing breeze - the only trouble is, it can be quite noisy, not something that bothers me too much, but it can be annoying if I'm at my desk trying to concentrate or listen to music . I needed something a little quieter that would still do the job of keeping me cool at my desk, and opted for the Lindy USB Fan. The fan is easy enough to set up - it simply plugs into a USB port, and it starts whirring away . It's relatively simply and clean in design, with black cable, which is flexible to allow for easy positioning, and silver coloured blades that are made of a soft and flexible material, and can be wiped clean if they get dusty. The length of the cable itself is 45cm. Now, the cable length actually presented me with the first problem ( to be fair, I should have read the product description more fully, rather than purchasing on a whim. You see, my computer is laid out with the monitor on top of the desk, and the tower stored on a shelf beneath the desk, a couple of inches off the floor. In addition, the USB ports on my PC are actually at the rear of the PC tower - an area that, thanks to the design of my desk, is not easily accessible. The wire simply would not stretch, unless I were to drill a hole through which to feed it (something I am reluctant to do, as I love my desk too much) and even then, it would only allow a small amount of the wire onto my desk, rather limiting the usefulness . Not to be thwarted, I ordered myself a USB extension cable, and soon had the fan working - though I now had some unsightly wires running up the side of my desk! The bendy neck is pretty good though - it's easy to move the fan around, change the height of it, or change the angle, all by bending the wire . However, unless the fan is secured to something, for example clinging to the edge of my monitor, I do find that it does tend to topple over onto it's side fairly often, something not helped by the fact that I do fidget about a lot. That said, when it's whirring away, it does produce a breeze that is actually fairly impressive for such a small fan. The blades are soft and flexible, and can be instantly stopped with a finger without any damage of harm - something I was sure to test as I have a daughter that WILL mess around with these kinds of things. It is also much quieter than my large desktop fan - yes, there is some whirring noise, but it is only really noticeable in an otherwise silent room, and can barely be heard when I have my music on, even quietly . Overall, I do think this is a rather good little product - however, due to my own fidget's and the positioning of my various computer components, I really found it rather impractical for my own use, simply because I needed to purchase a USB extension cable to use it, which then left unsightly trailing wires that were something of a trip hazard . This ended up relegated to the desk drawer, where it remains, alone and unloved, to this day . However - if you happen to have a laptop, I think this would be a wonderful purchase, and rating it on quality and performance alone, I still think this easily deserves four stars .
