With my desktop computer out of action I've been using my laptop a fair amount more than usual. Whilst doing thing I have noticed just how hot the bottom of computer got when I had it on my lap...so I started using it with a pillow underneath. Not a good idea in hindsite as it just overheated my already heated laptop further.
I purchased the Lapdesk from Amazon for £39 primarily for the built in fan an so it would take the laptop directly off my lap. The built in speakers were simply a bonus.
The cooling fan has thus far kept my laptop within reasonable levels of cooleness wherever I have used it. This has included piled with my bed covers, slouched on the sofa, at a desk and balanced on my knees. The lapdesk has given me much more freedom as to how 'truely' portable my laptop is, as before using it in the mist of my bed sheets would have very quickly over heated it before. Suprissingly the fan isn't very noisy, and certainly when it is playing any sound I don't hear it at all.
The speakers built into the device are 2.0, this set up almost 'throws' the sound around you and when watching movies or listening to music makes the whole experiance much better than with my laptops own speakers that always sounded a little tinnie. Although the speakers don't specify any particular wattage (if that is the right term?) the bass sound nice a deep and doesn't crackle or fuzzle.
My favourite bit about this product is that it doens't need batterys or need to be connected to the mains to work. It comes with a short USB cable and this you connect to your laptop - Simple! The whole thing is plug and play so you neither have to install any drivers to make it work. However one thing I have noticed is that using this drastically reduces the battery life of my laptop, so I need to be sat near the plug socket anyway as the laptop needs to be on charge.
Integrated withing the lapdesk is a volume controll to independantly controll the volume of your laptop if using the speakers on the lapdesk. This is handy although it sometimes gets confusing as you have to check both the sound on the laptop and and lapdesk to see which needs altering sometimes! There is also a button to turn on and off the fan. Personally I genrally have it turned on all the time as it is almost silent and the main reason I bought this was to keep my laptop cool.
Overall I am pleased with my buy. It is simple to use, light and small to carry round and functions well at keeping my laptop nie and cool. The speakers are a bonus and often don't get used but as the unit was a similar price to products without speakers I don't mind.
I recently had to pay a fair bit of money to have my laptop repaired; the fan had been picking up dust from the table and my lap, causing the fan to become stuck, and, so the laptop overheated (I've also gone though two chargers due to overheating).
So I'd taken to placing the laptop on a hard plastic tray. It solved the issue with the dust, but after an hour or so of use, the tray would become hot to touch, so I'd have to turn of the laptop so it could cool. A huge inconvienience - and that's not counting the marks the tray would leave on my legs.
Logitech's LAPDESK is such a simple - yet amazing - idea. It's a plastic tray with an elevated back, with a fan built into the center of it. I'd class it a must own for that alone, but it goes one better; it also has two speakers built in, and the tray's underside is padded.
There's no need to worry about room for another plug for the LAPDESK. You simply use the attached USB cable andthen flick the LAPDESK's on/off switch on the top of the tray. The fan is so quiet; you have to lower your ear close to it to hear it.
Also on the top of the tray are three buttons; a mute button, one to increase the volume and one to decrease it. I'm to a technical expert, but I can say the LAPDESK's speakers are so much better then the laptop's tinny one's.
Oh; I've not needed to even glance at the instruction manuel - The LAPDESK is that easy to use. What else do you need to know?
