... is nice to report that the PC comes with a full set of CD-ROMs for Windows Me and all the applications, so none of this nonsense about not having a copy of the operating system to re-install in case of problems. And the CDs, together with all the documentation, comes in a sturdy neat software-package sized carton – useful. I also bought the slightly upgraded Harman/Kardon loudspeakers. Not wonderful, frankly. Probably barely wo...more

Premium Review Dell Dimension XPS B: My XPS B 10000 is good, fast, solid. Pleased I bought it. (619 words)

My Dell XPS B 10000 is a good, fast, solid PC. Pleased I bought it. As you probably know if you have done your homework, this Dell Dimension is one of the fastest PCs in its class, though not necessarily the fastest. I ordered mine with 128MB of RAM and the standard 18GB (or is it 20GB?) 7200rpm drive, and I find it wonderfully fast for the applications I use (I don’t use games). The main difficulty I have with it now is that there is so little to say about it. It arrived on time (well, early actually – but the carrier failed to call to advise of delivery); the packaging is superb, making it the easiest appliance to unpack I have ever ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Another great product from Dell (267 words)

I've owned many Dell's, and they have all been excellent all round. The reason I first chose Dell was their prices were quite a bit cheaper than other leading manufactureres, their machines were highly recommended in reviews, and I could customise the system I wanted down to every last detail. Contacting them was particularly easy, their staff are well trained and knowledgable, which makes a nice change in this business. It's nice to be able to get help off someone who actually knows more than you do! My current machine is an XPS 800, I wasn't entirely sure of all the parts I wanted in it, so on calling Dell, the operator was helpful and full of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dell Dimension XPS B: 1000MHz worth the wait (415 words)

When I ordered my XPS B1000, Dell advised that it would take 8 working days for delivery. Whilst their estimated delivery time was extremely accurate, I did have some dismay using their online 'Order Status' facility. I tried to check the status 2 days after ordering and the system kept telling me there was no such order despite the customer ref. and order no. being given to me over the phone by a Dell sales rep. It transpired they forgot to tell me the online check did not require the first 2 digits of my customer ref. After that I could see my order and followed it through the various stages of production. I also registered online for their email ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Watch the Hard Drive & software backups (426 words)

In my experience, the Dell Dimension XPS are a well made, well specified machine, which I found easy to set up and use, while the price although not the cheapest, was reasonable given the technical support that it allowed access to. My major reservations came, when after about 15 months of light use, my hard drive suddenly started to develop a fault. I found the technical support phone line difficult to reach, with the busy signal most of the time and then when I finally got through, it took over 2 hours to go through all the steps, needed, to finally ascertain that my hard drive was 'dead'. The fault meant that Windows wouldn't start, ...  Read the complete review

Dell Dimension XPS B1000r (128MB RDRAM, 19-inch Monitor)  (454 words)

The race to 1 GHz ended faster than anyone expected, with AMD recently beating Intel to the punch by a few days. Not to be outdone, however, Intel is now shipping limited quantities of its 1-GHz Pentium IIIs. Dell's new Dimension XPS B1000r is an extremely high-end system that shows off the chip's awesome power. Unfortunately, the machine also comes with an equally high-end price. Cutting-Edge Components Because the 1-GHz Pentium III chips are so scarce, it's no surprise that the Dell comes in at a wallet-draining $4,250. But the CPU is just the beginning of the system's rich components. Also included are an Intel 820 core logic chipset, ...  Read the complete review
