Nifty name brand, or new nemesis? (HP PAVILION 8505)
Advantages: Small, Visually appealing, Cheap Disadvantages: Somewhat slow for the specs
These days one has to seriously weigh the value of buying a name brand PC equiped with support and a decent warranty, and just buying a no-name piece together...or even building a computer yourself. The Pavilion 8508 comes with most of what you really need to get by, at a decent price. It is severely lacking in the multimedia area, the graphics capabilities are very limited, and the overall processing speed of the machine is somewhat dissapointing for the documented specs. The decision to pre-load Windows ME was a seriously poor one...I don't know if it conflicts with a lot of the Pavilion hardware or what, but the machine locks up on a fairly regular basis--even when running pre-loaded, supported software. What you get for your money is fairly good in theory, but you might want to seriously consider the extra expense (or not) of purchasing/downloading a different operating system to run on it. Overall, it's a semi-decent buy, but next time I'm going to get twice the power in a no-name case, for the same price. Summary: |
