I bought this laptop for my wife in March 2002 - she wanted one for her birthday, and I wanted to keep her happy! A trawl around the computer shops in Tottenham Court Rd (where I was looking for loads of processing power and as many features as possible for as little money as I could get away with) found me what I now consider a real gem. Pre-installed with Windows XP, it come as standard with 256Mb Ram, 20Gb HDD, DVD/CDRW, floppy disc drive, 56k modem, network card, 2 USB ports, firewire port, 2 PCMCIA slots, TV and VGA out. Software-wise it has loads of stuff for handling music and video, but is limited to the MS Works pagage and MS Word 2000. There have been no crashes of note, but a couple of the games are a bit on the slow side, probably because of the graphics card - although the 14.1" display gives good colour resolution. The downside of this machine has to be the battery life and the sound quality (surely the bane of all laptops). The DVD is also firmware encoded to allow only 4 changes of region - but that is summountable with a small patch that's available on the Web; the CD writer seems to work well. I removed a reasonable number of the bundled programs - I have to ask, how many different ways do Sony want me to be able to play a DVD or listen to music? I also took off the Works suite and replaced it with Office 2000, which better suits my wife's needs. This laptop has become a favourite with all the family, especially since I networked it to our PC and shared the broadband internet connection. The games I've added were also a hit and the kids (well, all of us really) have been known to while away the hours on the Sims, despite the slightly slow graphics handling. All in all this was a good buy and, more to the point, has done the job of at least helping to keep my wife happy. Surely recommendation enough!
