... FPS player worth their salt has played Duke Nukem, a series that has since evolved into numerous third person outings. However, Duke Nukem 3D is the entry that is most people s favourite, as it marked a generally change towards 3D games in the FPS genre rather than the tiresome 2D "rail shooters" that we d all become so accustomed to. Duke is just one very cool game; the plot may not be up to much (it s usual Duke vs mutant shtick), but Duke s superbly-voiced quips, the levels, the insane weapons, and the sheer mood, tone and atmosphere really adds up to something that is incredibly satisfying. ... call this game dated now is no surprise, but it might hold more weight if I announce that when I bought it a few months after its release, I was pretty disgusted at the poor graphics and stiff gameplay, and returned it to HMV for a full refund the next day. While I enjoyed the first Delta Force game, this is a poor sequel that can t capture the same grittiness and ends up being more frustrating, and, of course, horrendously ugly to look at. The need for realism has grown even further in this sequel to the point where it generates a lot of anger.
