World of Warcraft: The Wrath of the Lich King Expansion Pack (PC)
by saiyuri This is the current expansion of World of Warcraft (commonly known as WoW), you need both the original game and Burning Crusade (BC) to be able to use this. Without a basic understanding of WoW this review is pretty useless (check out http://members.dooyoo.co.uk/ pc-game/world-of-warcraft-the-burning-crusade-add-on-pc/ 1443727/ or other ... people's reviews). Basically to sum it up it's a MMORPG, a very popular and successful one at that! Released November 2008 and sold a staggering 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours, there are an estimated 11 million subscribers to this ever growing game. With the release of WotLK (Wrath of the Lich King) we saw the release of a new continent, the cold and dreary shores of Northrend, full of huge beasts, giants and packs of undead. It also contains the first constant battle ground in the form of Wintergrasp forcing even the cowards who reside on PvE realms to face up to each other and fight to the death (or hope you can run faster than the other player!). Throughout this expansion a lot of the content available today was staggered on being release - ensuring that people who enjoyed PvE (Player vs. Environment) didn't burn out and get bored, the three main Raids released later where Ulduar, Trial of the Champions and Icecrown Citadel, each included a normal and a hard mode (to ensure the content was accessible to even the most 'casual' player but also challenging enough to keep the 'hardcores' interested, with each raid being released the 5 man Heroics gave out better 'emblems' to ensure people could keep up and buy the gear they needed to realistically gain access to the content. Also much to the delight (and dismay of many) with WotLK came a new 'Hero' class - a Death Knight (DK). You can only created one DK per realm once you have a character above level 55 (this is the level a DK starts at, also there was restrictions, which have later been removed, where you could only created one on the realm you currently had a level 55 on). DK's are rather 'over powered' and incredibly easy to level so you tend to see a lot of people playing them and often rather badly - which gives them quite a bad reputation in the WoW community. Wow is often described as being more addictive than crack cocaine, and can often cause a love hate relationship, would recommend thinking twice before purchasing the game and expansions if you are prone to an addictive personality. I'm rather glad to say however since I've achieved an awful lot PvE wise and have a huge stock pile of gold to tide me over I'm trying to take a break from WoW and get into much healthier habits so when the upcoming expansion comes out (Cataclysm) I won't let it be so self destructive! Cost wise this will set you back £18 from most retailers and online so for the really impatient might just be worth popping into your nearest game store! However if you don't have the first two games Amazon are doing them as a package for less than £30 - only saves a few pound but every little helps. Read the complete review |

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Expansion Pack (PC)
by saiyuri This is the first expansion to the game World of Warcraft (commonly known as WoW), released in 2007 (staged across the world it seems). If you don't already know about WoW I recommend either reading mine (http://members.dooyoo.co.uk/pc-game/world-of-warcraft-pc/1443695/) or someone else's' - I'm just going to sum it up as a MMORPG and ... leave it at that. This expansion saw the addition of two new races, Draenei for the Alliance and Blood Elves for the Horde and additionally allowing both factions to now created Shamans and Paladins (was previously faction specific). Along with these new races came the addition of a new continent to discover (Outland) and the introduction of flying mounts. It also includes over twenty new raids and instances to explore and defeat. Also the level cap was increased to level 70s with this expansion, however many have and still find it far too easy to get from level 60-70. Buying the expansion isn't really an option if you wish to continue playing World of Warcraft as very few people you meet will not have the latest, which makes grouping for quests, Dungeons and Raids incredibly hard, limiting your game time enjoyment and experience. Towards the end of this expansion they included two new profession (Jewelcrafting and Inscription) in preparation of Wrath of the Lich King's release and have since made it possible to turn off a characters experience so they can remain in the original WoW's level bracket for those that wish to experience the old 'end game raiding experience'. It can be purchased new for as little as £6.50 or £5 from the Amazon new (however its essential you do get a genuinely new copy as it can't be used to upgrade more than one account) or as part of the 'battle chest' for £9.36 (alternatively can be downloaded straight from Blizzard's website for the impatient - however the site fails to produce prices but know from experience you can pick up any of the expansions cheaper off Amazon). If you have the original WoW you can try out Burning Crusade for a 10 day free trial - however there isn't any information to what that entails (would assume 5 levels or so to prevent you trialling all the way through to the third expansion). Star Trek: Armada II (PC)
by Jenraux Despite being designed to be similar to its predecessor, Star Trek Armada II adds a lot more features to the series, some i don't like, some i do like. The game now contains 6 races instead of 4. Adding the Cardassians and Species 8472 into the game. These new additions are fairly radical, Species 8472 have the ability to move ... their starbase very slowly, also instead of building ships directly, they produce embryo's which then can morph into any ship of the players choosing for a certain cost of resources. The Cardassians are less radical, instead they have powerful ships, most of which can cloak. In this game, instead of units dying as soon as their shields fail, they have added hull hit points. Despite this, ships are a lot weaker, hence battles will end far quicker, the ships are also faster and fire faster. Warp drive was also added to the game, allowing ships to travel across the largest maps in seconds, this is probably one of the main features i disliked. New resources were added to the game, instead of just having to collect dilithium, you now have to collect Metal as well, Metal is collectable from moons that are now spread across the map. Players must build orbital stations in order to collect Metal, hence needing the player to spread out from their initial base, and also forces them to fight for moons and have a fleet ready to protect their weak and defenseless orbital stations. There is still a large amount of maps available to use, and there is also a map editor available, like there was for the original Armada, which allows you to create your own map. There is a well known and popular mod for Star Trek Armada II, known as Fleet Operations. I shall list the main things this modification does with Armada II, at least the ones i can remember anyway. - Removes Warpdrive - Removes Cardassians - Removes Species 8472 - Removes Metal collecting - Removes Metal Moons - Removes Planets - Adds new resource Titanium, along with moons for it. - Adds new resource Supplies, required for all construction, can be purchased in the Starbase - Adds ability to choose from 1 of 2 avatars per race, each having special abilites and units. - Updates almost every if not every ship model. - Removes ability to create fusion cubes. - Updates explosion animations - Replaces most of the original maps with new ones - Comes with an in-built map editor - Removes campaign mode - Adds extra settings for setting up a game - Adds a new race, the Dominion. - Ships generally stronger and slower, making battles longer - All races now have several new ships. - Sensor stations now emit pings to detect enemy ships, rather than always detecting them There are several more things this mod changes, most of them for the good, its an excellent mod which i seriously recommend. The modification can be found here: www.fleetops.net/ The mod is still updated regularly, a new update coming out every few months. So yeah, the normal game is good, but nothing special, but if you install Fleet Operations, it makes the game so much better, well worth buying just for the mod. Read the complete review |
