Advantages: Even learning curve and entertaining
Disadvantages: Dated graphics
I picked up a copy of this and Jack Nicklaus 5 at a local computer show for just £1.00, so i was not expecting much from them. With Jack Nicklaus, i had my fears confirmed as it was cumbersome and awkward to play, but not so with actua golf 2. The install was smooth and fast and on loading you are presented with a very slick front end, where all of your options are laid out in clear form. The overall object of this game is to start as an amatuer and play your way through increasingly difficult tournaments to become number one on the proffesional circuit. The courses are many and varied, from rough windy scottish courses, through to the dry still desert courses. Weather conditions are changable throughout matches, which does affect the ball dynamics. The swing meter is difficult to master, but once you have it is very accurate and will improve your play no end, so it is worth initially practicing on the driving range to get the feel of it. The best feature of the package is the running commentry whilst playing, which gives your matches a very televisual feel to them. There are a lot of varied comments, so the voice overs do not become too repetative, which would normally have you reaching for the sound options on other programs. The graphics are not stunning, as they are a hybrid of vector and rendered images, but the animation of the characters is pleasing enough and the course redraws are fast. Overall a good golf game, which i found was very difficult to drag yourself away from, once you start a match.
