Age of Empires 2 (PC)
Advantages: Gameplay, difficulty options, variety of scenarios, enjoyment!
Disadvantages: Graphics may not be good enough for most gamers (nothing major, the graphics are still pretty decent
This is probably one of my favourite PC games of all time. It such an entertaining game, and can keep you occupied for hours!
So what's it all about? Well, Age of Empires 2 is a strategy game. You start with nothing (usually) and try and build up the biggest armies to destroy your enemies!
In the standard game, you usually start with a town centre, a handful of villiagers and some resources nearby. You also start of in the Dark Age. Basically, you have to build up your village. You start by gathering in food (forage bushes, farms, sheep and deer), gold, stone and wood. These allow you to create people or build. For example, you need to collect wood to build houses. Every house means you can have 5 more people (increases your population limit). But people need food to be created. And to gather food more efficiently, you need a mill. This also needs resources.... Well, you get the picture. As you build more and collect more resources, you can advance ages through to the Castle Age. Each age allows you to do more things. For example, building barracks in the Dark Age allows you to create Militia. Advance to the next age and you can upgrade your Militia to Soldiers. but you will also be able to create and extra unit (such as pikemen). You can also create seige engines, such as onagars, or trubuchets if you build a castle.
What you build depends on your civilization. There are numerous ones to choose from, including Britons, Franks, Turks, Mongols, Goths, Saracens etc. Each have specialist units, and specialist areas (Vikings are obviously better on water, for example). But by the end of it all, you should have a thriving city, with lots of resources, a huge army, a castle, stone walls and guard towers. Then it's just a case of marching to your enemy and crushing them!
It does depend what game you play. Some, you have to kill the King (Regicide). Other, destroy all enemy units. Or, just build a Wonder (which takes tons of resourses and time) and allow it to stand for 1000 years. There are a reange of scenarios, which is good for variety. Or, just create your own! You can customise it right down to what resources are about, how many people you each have and what the terrain is like. The possibilities are endless!
Or, go on a campaign. Follow in the footsteps of Joan of Arc or Ghengis Khan, as you build up their empires by completing various different scenarios.
Graphics may leave a little to be desired for some gamers, but I think it adds some kind of charm to the game. After all, this is an almost top-down strategy game. The graphics don't need to be amazing HD quality! But saying that, they aren't terrible!
As for difficulty, you choose! Easiest, Easy, Medium, Hard or Hardest! This game really does cater for every ability, whether you're a novice or an expert! I began a novice, and now I'm pretty good. It can get frustrating though. Some scenarios you'll need to de a few times. I got stuck on the second mongol one for ages, but on about the 20th go (slight exaggertion!) I realise where I was going wrong. That's right, you need to think about this game a bit! It's annoyingly addictive as well. I think to myself 'I know, I'll play Age of Empires for half an hour', and 2 hours later I'm still on there, so engrossed in it I even name the people I create!
Overall, I think this is a great game... one that will be a classic very soon! It's got a lot of variety with scenarios, civilizations and creating your own scenario. It's got good difficulty options, which makes it an ideal game for all abilities. And most importantly, it's a great game to play! I enjoy it everytime I play it, and I never get tired of it! Highly recommended for all those budding commanders out there!
