Advantages: Great campaigns
Disadvantages: Not too many save points
One of the gaming classics of the late 1990s is Aliens Versus Predator, a game that presents a crackling premise with a lot of promise, and actually delivers. You can play as either the Alien from the Alien films, the Predator from, yes, the Predator films, or the Marines that appeared in the second Alien film, Aliens. This is a superb game that's a fantastic companion piece to both the respective films and the numerous comic books based on the premise.
Whilst the Alien and Predator campaigns are rather nifty, in as much as being able to play as two of the best monsters from sci-fi, the real treat of the game is, surprisingly, the Marine campaign. As you nervously walk around every corner, the game becomes an incredibly tense and rather scary outing that effectively transfers the tension of the game onto a new form - as your radar shows an enemy near you, you'll look up at the ceiling to make sure an Alien hasn't surprised you, and just HOPE that the Predator isn't cloaked behind you.
As a result of this fear element, and the general lack of the ability to save, it is a rather challenging game, and won't be ploughed through in just a few hours. However, it's never frustrating enough that it seems as though this lack of saving was a way to artificially inflate the game's difficult and completion time.
Generally speaking, though, this is a superbly designed game that's taken extreme care to please fans of the films and keep faithful to the vision of the various film's directors. There isn't much to the premise, but given the lack of ability for 2/3 of the game's characters to speak, that's not surprising and not really such a bad thing - it's incredibly nifty playing as two of the most terrifying fictional characters ever, and the Marine experience is an utterly horrifying one, particularly if you hole up in a dark room with the surround sound turned up!
Summary: A chilling and exciting FPS
