Advantages: Complex, involving strategy game
Disadvantages: Steep learning curve
Anno 1503 is the perfect antidote to generic first person shooters and the 'half strategy' provided by conflict themed games such as Starcraft or the Command and Conquer series.
It takes the concept of colony development and then skews what is normally offered in such games by making the economy of your colony and trade with your neighbours/competitors the main focus of the game.
From humble beginnings as a small settlement with a couple of wooden shacks and a farm or two, you're given the opportunity to create a bustling metropolis with castles and thriving schools and universities, all supported by a complex network of farms, mines and craftsmen and women.
Before too long you can set up a global network of mutually linked colonies, automated trading routes for your fleet of ships and a range of alliances with your fellow players.
There are also options for combat in the game (if required) and epic sea battles are possible, as are invasions by land. The combat side of the game is not nearly as polished as the economic models and those looking for another 'shooter' should steer clear.
Pros:
Very developed economic models
The 'thinking mans' ' strategy game
Very detailed, down to the smallest of levels
Deeply involving
Cons:
*Very* complex - I recommend looking around for a good guide to help you get started, the tutorials aren't up to much
Not much in the line of warfare for all you frustrated generals out there!
Summary: Detailed and enjoyable colony builder game
