Advantages: Great gameplay
Disadvantages: Not much to it
If there's any game I can think of that's supremely underrated, and in dire need of a sequel, it's the Carmageddon series, and particularly the latest title, Carpocalypse Now. It's an insanely violent game that's not for the faint of heart, and unsurprisingly, the game recieved a lot of negative press attention for its high level of violence and sadistic gore.
The premise is a doozy, borrowing a lot from exploitation films like Death Race 2000, where the player is put in a rather disturbing set of races, where the goals are to either finish the race first, murder all the other competitors, or simply kill every pedestrian on the level. The game actively encourages running down pedestrians (for which it recieved the most ardent criticism), and glorifies it by setting the game to a pronounced Heavy Metal soundtrack, including a few songs from Iron Maiden to ensure that your pulse is racing.
There isn't really much to it, but the little that's there has been crafted with care - the vehicle physics are rather impressive as you plough through both peds and other drivers, and as was uncommon for the time, the vehicles will sustain pronounced damage, even as far as splitting in two, and STILL allowing you to drive them! This level of detail was unprecedented for 1998, and a lot of games (such as Gran Turismo), ten years on, still don't have this level of detail!
Although it de-evolves into little more than a torrent of murder and mayhem, it's a thoroughly entertaining, refreshingly un-PC game that's going to please gorehounds and those who want a racing game with a twist. Insanely violent, utterly crazy, but always with a great sense of humour, this is a uniquely perverse experience that's not going to please everyone, but's an entertaining diversion for sure.
Summary: Simple, but simply brilliant!
