Advantages: addicive
Disadvantages: still CM3 engine
Championship Manager has ruined my life. I dread to think of the number of hours I have spent playing the game. The situation became more serious when the saved game feature of the recent editions showed you exactly how long you had been playing for in total - this was very worrying but gave an indication of exactly how much value for money I had got. CM is a football management game which includes various leagues and teams from the very best to the worst. It doesn't have the fancy presentation of say EA Sports games but more than makes up for this with a wealth of options. The beauty of the game is that you can go into these options as deeply as you want - a season can take a couple of days or a month depending on the player. Each player has a number of physical and skill attributes rated out of 20 as well as some hidden figures such as big match temprement. The most recent game (2001/2) adds a fog feature whereby you don't see all a player's attributes until you have had them scouted. Matches are presented in a text format with a running text commentary throughout the game. Audio options were available in earlier games but these were rubbish. The game has no ending so you can continue to play it for as long as you want - way past the time that todays teenage stars have retired. The amazing thing is how emotionally attached you can get to the players in the game who are basically a list of numbers. You'll realise what I mean when you can't bring yourself to drop your young Swedish striker who you plucked from obscurity. The problem I have with the game is that all of the recent versions have been just slight improvements of the same engine. Despite the value I have got from the series I can't help but be slightly disapointed with each reincarnation. It won't be until CM4 that my hunger will be again satisfied. If you have played CM but are tempted beware it will take over y
our life.
