Advantages: Was very addictive

Disadvantages: Was very addictive, eats time, newer games use more developed game engine and have up to date data

Before having played the game I couldn't see the appeal thinking it was a glorified database manipulator with a football theme...
Then along came a free demo in a cereal packet and I was hooked and bought the full version soon after.

The basic premise of the game is that it's the beginning of the 2001/02 football season and you've just been installed as manager of your chosen club. Your board gives you their expectations for the season ahead and away you go.
Its down to you from here, pick the teams, arrange scouting, negotiate contracts/transfers, deal with the media and so on.
Do well and you might win some silverware and other clubs may be interested in you.
Do rubbish and your fans and chairman will be considering your future followed by applying to managerless clubs for a new job.

Within the game there's pretty much a stat for everything, some available some require scouting to be done before they can be viewed and some are just hidden in the background of the game. So you can play the game in as much or little detail as you want.

As a sign of how addictive the game was in one area of the game it tells you how many hours you've spent playing along with a comment.

All the players and clubs data is from the 01/02 season so anyone looking for up to date data will be better off buying this seasons game (either Football manager or Championship manager).
Not sure if its a good thing or bad but the game model is based on a time before multi billionaire chairmen and the league cup was still a competition clubs went for.
The game can be bought quite cheaply now which is good if you're looking for a blast from the past.

Summary: Inexpensive blast from the past
