I can?t exactly recall the precise time when I first heard about this. It may just be me, but I find with some of the truly great cult books or films, or in this case video games, you never really ever see any advertising at all. Rather its almost as if they?re completely devoid of any media attention whatsoever, and as such their reputations, if you excuse the expression, precede them. I?ll try and explain. Chrono Trigger was one of Square's final games for the Super Nintendo back in 1995 so it didn't get a very wide release because of overall poor sales of video games that year. True, some can get the chance to play it on the Playstation too but even that game will set you back a few bucks on eBay. So why bother with this 2D Adventure/RPG anyways? CT was dubbed the 'dream project': its script was by ex-Enix Dragon Quest writer, Yuji Horii, designed by Akira Toriyama, who is the man behind Dragon Ball Z and did the character designs for Dragon Quest, and produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi, Final Fantasy's producer. This, coupled with the fact that it is a Square game, was enough to ensure its success in Japan. Further west, however, the name Hironobu Sakaguchi doesn't exactly ring a bell with the average gamer.
