Premium Review Civilisation Call to Power (PC): Sid Meiers does it again... (984 words)

Civilisation was one of the most important computer games ever released. It took the management / simulation genre onto a whole new level. Instead of managing a company or whatever you took on the role of leading a whole civilisation of people. What is more you didn't just control it for a while but for centuries or even millenia - if you could keep your people going. You were in control of everything from food production to trade relations and warfare with other tribes, stealin or sharing technological advances, as suchlike. Along with Bullfrog's excellent game Populus (where you controlled a diety in a battle to make your people the world rulers), this created a whole ...  Read the complete review

Civilization is one of those strategy games that takes hours to play - you either love them or you hate them. My soon to be husband Jonathan has long been an enthusiastic game player and has recently introduced me to Civilization: Call to power. I had some experience of Civ 2, which I didn't get on with at all, and I think that this new release is an enormous improvement. The point of the game: You begin in 4000BC with one settler,(or possibly two if you are lucky) you can see a little bit of his surroundings, the rest is shrouded in darkness. Beyond the boundaries of your fledgling civilisation, there could be barbarian hordes waiting to descend, friendly ...  Read the complete review

This version of civilisation, like its predecessors, is highly addictive. Once you start playing it, time just seems to fly by and before you know it 7pm has turned into 2am....! The game play is pretty much the same as before, although the interface is much improved, allowing you to form 'build queues' in your cities for example, as well as allowing you to change the scientific advance you are investigating easily. However, this is not the only difference between call to power and the earlier versions; lots more tribes are available for you to try and rule, as well as some new government types and some cool new technology advances, units and wonders ...  Read the complete review

Civilization: Call to Power (hereafter referred to as CTP) is a result of legal wrangling over the Civilization name which had previously been inked to two computers games – Civilization, and Civilization 2 unsurprisingly. It’s a turn based strategy like god game in which you, as the ruler of your empire (you can chose to be almost anyone – American, Scot, Roman, Incan, French etc.) and it’s up to you so make your empire grow until you have achieved certain goals, like wiping all the other empires out, or achieving the ultimate in science. You start of with one or two settler units, in the year 4000BC, and from there you must ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Civilisation Call to Power (PC): Does it even have a bad point? (479 words)

If you are wondering what the Civ games are about I suppose I better explain. Civ starts in 3000BC when all that there is of your race is a band of settlers. Over time your civilization grows as you build citys and expand, and technological advances allow you to build new improvements to your citys and better military units. You need these military units because as you may have guessed, you are not alone. A maximum of six other civiizations can occupy the same world and they all have the same goal as you.....To reach Alpha Centuri first. Why we want to go there god knows, but it's a good excuse for a scrap! I don't know where to start with this game, its so ...  Read the complete review
