... home truths he'd rather not know, and so he has to arm up with a gun and take the ghouls haunting the area down. The gameplay is very fun; it casts a delicate balance between gunplay and magic, while also being very atmospheric and dark. It is, however, very much a product of its time, in that it is incredibly linear and not as layered or nuanced as it could be. However, it delivers the requisite creepiness and is sufficient proof that Barker's skills translate well into another medium....more

Crowned Review Clive Barker's Undying (PC): Scared? You Will be (1271 words)

“My journey has been a long and perilous one. I have been through hell and high water, had my sanity questioned on every corner. I have seen sights that no man should have ever seen, encountered foul beasts and demonic beings from realms way that are a cruel version of the world I know and love and yet I have not left the walls of my humble bedroom.” Not since Half Life have I played a First Person Shoot-em up that has engrossed me so totally and that game is Clive Barker’s Undying. A game which manages to create a new lease of life for a genre, which has slowly mutated from being a single player experience to a multi-player on line ...  Read the complete review

Run, hide, all your darkest fears and nightmares have come to get you. Clive Barker the author of Hellraiser, Nightbreed and Candyman brings you a horror 3d shooter fest. It’s a game that will grab you by the throat and not let go till you’re resting in pieces. The game starts with a brief story of a wartime friendship. You play the part of Patrick Galloway, a sort of early 20th century Fox Mulder. While serving for king and country, you and your best friend are attacked by unknown magical forces. The result of which finds you in hospital, and your friend and the rest of your unit missing. Years later your friend contacts you and invites you to come ...  Read the complete review

Released in 2001, 'Clive Barker's Undying' is a first person shooter with a strong horror/occult theme, in which you play as a paranormal investigator who, having returned from the trencehs fo the first world war, has gone to the island estate of his old friend Jeremiah to find out what has happened to him. The game was helped into production by esteemed British horror writer Clive Barker (who also voices one of the game's main characters) and so it should comes as no surprise to learn taht the game has a rich, dark and absorbing story, a powerful atmosphere and great aesthetics, requring you to go around the large island, fighting various ghosts and demons ...  Read the complete review

Only Barker could come up with a videogame as disturbing as this one. Never have I played an FPS with such horrific depth to it as Clive Barker's Undying. I can think of no better example of story-driven survival horror. While the weapons may be a little weak and unconventional, the sheer creativity behind the characters and enemies, coupled with the haunting atmospheres of the games many diverse environments make for a genuinely disturbing gaming experience. The game's protagonist is Patrick Galloway, a WW2 veteran and expert in the paranormal who receives a letter from his dying friend and fellow soldier, Jeremiah Covenant. The letter begs ...  Read the complete review

It has been a while since I picked up a first person shoot-em-up, not since Unreal graced my PC screens almost a year ago to this day in fact. This is not because I am not a fan of the genre, because I am, but basically because since the evolution of Half Life and Quake 3 there seems to have been little interesting activity on the gaming front in this genre. That is until Clive Barker's Undying hit the PC and following some rave reviews I just had to check it out. I am a big fan of the horror genre in general, be it books, movies or games, so this title looked perfect. Add to the mix, a certain Clive Barker, and things looked rather rosy...and they certainly ...  Read the complete review
