Advantages: Fantastic plot, Cool enemies, Innovative, Scyre spell, Written by Clive Barker.
Disadvantages: Weapons are a little unconventional, no multiplayer.
Only Barker could come up with a videogame as disturbing as this one. Never have I played an FPS with such horrific depth to it as Clive Barker's Undying.
I can think of no better example of story-driven survival horror. While the weapons may be a little weak and unconventional, the sheer creativity behind the characters and enemies, coupled with the haunting atmospheres of the games many diverse environments make for a genuinely disturbing gaming experience.
The game's protagonist is Patrick Galloway, a WW2 veteran and expert in the paranormal who receives a letter from his dying friend and fellow soldier, Jeremiah Covenant. The letter begs Patrick to investigate the occult happenings on his family estate, brought on by what he believes to be a family curse.
One by one, Galloway must finish off every accursed member of the Covenant family, fighting all manner of hellish creatures and utilizing many different spells and strange weapons along the way.
The game actually features the voice of critically acclaimed horror author Clive Barker (Hellraiser, Candyman, Books of Blood, Cabal, Weaveworld Jericho.) as the voice of Ambrose Covenant, the "black sheep" of the family.
The game was the first to come up with the highly innovative 'scyre' spell, which allows the player to witness previous events that have happened where he currently stands, often horrifyingly traumatic ones.
The storyline is incredibly engrossing and takes place in numerous places and even universes. The game has scarcely dated at all, despite being released in 2001.
The game uses the Unreal Tournament engine so its physics still look pretty cool, it has some nice special effects and cinematic cutscenes throughout. Sadly, the game lacks any kind of multiplayer mode, probably because there wasn't much call for it, as the game was not a big commerical success.
This game is definitely a must-play for any fans of survival horror or horror in general! It will scare the pants off you.
Summary: A fantastic survival horror that is a must-have for all fans of the genre.

- 05/10/09 I agree that it's one of the best horror games I've played and the companies should think about a PS3 / XBox new release. |

- 25/07/09 This was a good use of the Unreal engine - creepy and atmospheric. Good to see it getting some publicity as it's still very much worth a look. |
