Advantages: great game play, huge fun factor, realistically scary

Disadvantages: a couple of flaws

You run into the bedroom, and the door slams shut behind you, for some reason the ghost has stopped attacking. You hurriedly dart across the room, pick up the medi pack, and some ammo. There is a large "bang" from behind you, you spin around only to see the large double doors jolt and "bang" again. More laughing of children, a further two bangs, some thing big is out there, and then silence. You level your gun, put up a protection spell around you, and finally for good measure cast a spell that makes a flaming skull levitate by your hand. You approach the door slowly, only the noise of the fire crackerling in the hearth and the storm out side can be heard. You approach the door, you ready your self to leave the room, suddenly the door bursts inward. The room becomes a howling storm, you fight to stay in the room, but get sucked out onto the landing. Around you snow passes you, and you find your self getting sucked down the hall which breaks down from the plush mansion into a green void, full of debris and brick work spinning into an abyss. This game is good!
Until now I only had eyes for the "Thief" games, but Mr Barker and his demons would make mince meat out of poor old Garret. Every thing about this title oozes class, from the roof top fights under cover of a raging storm, to the laughing of ghostly children, right before you get pelted with the kitchens crockery, this is one atmospheric game.

Graphically it is very good, with some nice touches, curtains that blow in the wind, rain and light effects, all very nice, and not wasted at all, goes to show there is life in the Unreal engine yet. The sound to is excellent, the closer you walk to a window the louder the rain gets, you can hear howls in the distance, which gradually get louder as the Howlers hunt you down, and they do hunt you. Enemies wait for you to reload before they attack, put your back to the wall, and they will come over it, simply one of the best AI's
I have seen in a long time. Not often you see a demon duck for cover as you send a volley of ectoplasm over its head. One howler had me chasing it down a corridor, only when I turned the last corner to finish it off, it had invited it's extended family over to play. I was now faced with 5 Howlers who attacked in waves. Ok, it's not without its faults, because of the level of graphics there are some REALLY annoying loading times, and there are a few graphic glitches. Since each surface has a different sound I hoped for a touch of "Thief" hiding in shadows and then pouncing out, unfortunately it does not work like that, but hey nothings perfect. The weapons are ok, but the spells are great, especally the reserction spell, which lets you bring back your victim from the dead, complete with weapon and then let them go off and kill their mates. In short if you are after a day or three of fun, I can really recommend this game, and it's a must buy for all of us horror freaks out there.
