Command & Conquer-August 1995 GDI vs NOD
Command and conquer is a war based strategy game that I first came across in 1995 and I was absolutely hooked on the whole model, game genre and aspect of the whole thing. The purpose in the game is to form an army harvest resources and build troops of men teams of vehicles fleets helicopters and in any way defeat the enemy down to the very last man. When i first played this was round a friends house on the pc and luckily
the local video shop had it available to buy and was also available on the ps1 as well.
The main story is set in a alternate history with the GDI which is a united nations style world defence group fighting against the cult like brotherhood of NOD and the insane leader self proclaimed messiah Kane.
Most levels of starting with a mcv which is the backbone of your base it is the construction yard that you need to deploy to access more construction options such as power supply to training troops and having a war factory to build tanks but most off all you need to harvest ore or tiberium depending on what game you are playing which represents the income potential for your army.
Building more structures unlocks more so the more you build the more technology increases in the form of better troops vehicles and base defences such as manned guard towers, robotic missile defences, Obelisk of light all depending on your faction you choose which will aid your fight against the opposition. Playing the story mode requires you to complete many levels until you get some of the best bits of weaponry available although the story does a good job to hype up the need for new available weapons making you happy when you get to eradicate multiple enemies at the same time with it.
With games like this you to use more thought when attacking as each unit has pluses and minuses against others such as infantry pails against apc's , light tank against heavy or stealth vehicles and nod in general being cheaper yet not as strong in direct fighting instead preferring a hit and run guerilla style especially the stealth tanks causing a rock paper scissor effect if you do not have a good mix of troops and support when you attack you may be like lambs to the slaughter against a force with mixed vehicles troops and troops balancing the attack.
The save option the pc gives you can be very handy as you can save your game at crucial stages in a human vs AI opponent skirmish match which was not possible on the ps2. If you are good enough and play the computer on a hard enough level it will show no mercy and wisely pick you off when you don't expect it in many ways like attacking your power stations causing your automatic base defences to go offline allowing the enemy to walk straight in.
There is the usual story mode/campaign on the games with a video between each mission to build the tension and fill you in on your objectives but normally destroy every enemy sums it up quite well. Skirmish is a great multi player that can pit you against up to four other teams that depending on the game you choose to play.
The graphics are good even for the old 1995 game but you have to consider the changes over the course of the franchise history which you will see easily when comparing the original game against generals which is a far later model but i always enjoy seeing how the series kicked off.
Skirmish was always my favourite way to play the game as being a seasoned C&C veteran I don't need to play the story mode as I have done previously and when you play in the skirmish mode you have all the technology unlocked which results in better wars against opponents of various skill be them AI controlled or someone else sat behind their computers. Some of my skirmish games could last for hours possibly days if I turned off the base destroying super weapons and played a more chess like game getting to the point where I have roving patrols on the perimeter of my base with mini outpost bases protecting the ore/tiberium like valuable fields to slowly drain the enemy resources all while being self sufficiently stable and well protected behind a sea of technology walls and fire-power.
Over buying this product I would recommend the first decade pack which i brought ages ago for £10 at game station but that pack contains the following games making it a bargain.

The only downside is putting a product key in for every single game and the long loading time but its a small price to pay for a steal.
Command and Conquer is the first in a long line of C&C strategy games. You fight in real time as either Brotherhood of Nod or GDI (Global Defensive Initiative). The basic premise of the game is to build up your base and troops by harvesting tiberium from the locality and then take on enemy forces.
In my opinion, C & C provides a great introduction to the series and is simple to both play and understand. However, like all 'God' type games it has it's drawbacks. Depending on your computer spec the gameplay can be quite slow which does effect the overall experience as real time doesn't really feel like real time. Graphically by today's standards it is quite plain however later sequels obviously improve on this.
Most post 2000 computers with 3D graphics cards will be able to run the game fine and I think that if you like this introduction to the genre then you may loose a few night's sleep playing it!
True vintage gaming and without a doubt one of the best games ever created.
Very entertaining and very addictive, with some of the best rendered cut scenes of its era, this game will not dissapoint.
This is the first in the series of the command and conquor games and an instant hit. With its very easy to use command display, building power plants or maning facilities is as easy as point and click, same goes for the building of troops and vehicles, each vehicle has its advantages and disadvantages (as do the troops) so finding out the pro's and con's of each 'unit' is all part of the fun of the game!
With an extensive story line and two main forces to choose from (Brotherhood of NOD who are the bad guys and Global Defence Initiative or GDI for short who are a coalition of international peace keeping forces) You will not be able to help being sucked into the story line.
Easily be best thing about the game if being able to play as the two forces, these arent just using different units in the same missions, you are actually playing a completely different set of missions, although some of them are the same time frame but from the opposite point of view. This gives the game huge replayability and will no doubt become a favourite for many years to come.
Real time strategy games have long since been a staple diet of gamers everywhere, and Command and Conquer is the game that sparked the whole thing off....well....almost. Command and Conquer is actually a sequel in all but name to developer Westwood's previous effort, Dune 2, Battle For Arrakis, a now-ancient little game based on Frank Herbert's award-winning science fiction book in which the player plays as the head of one of three Houses each vying to seek control of Arrakis, a desert world rich in the 'Spice' that is used for fuelling space craft. A bit like America's invasion of and Iraq really.
Anyway, this innovative little top-down game had you controlling tanks and infantry whilst expanding your base and sending huge harvesters out to gather the precious spice. Command and Conquer uses exactly the same game mechanics, changing the setting to Earth a hundred or so years in the future and replacing the spice with a mysterious meteorite-based mineral called Tiberium, and giving the whole concept a glossy sheen by employing some for-the-time rather nice VGA graphics and plenty of cool rendered cutscenes full of futuristic warfare.
The game allows you to play as either the Global Defence Initative or GDI (the good guys) or the Brotherhood of Nod, a shady globe-wide terrorist organisation with some gnarly new technology at their disposal led by a creepy bald guy by the name of Kane. Whichever side you choose, you then have to pick which territories you wish to attack in order to select each new mission. The cutscenes between missions are all pretty well done, consisting of a mix of live-action sequences with actors playing generels and the like who carry on the story and tell you what your mission objectives are, and rendered battle scenes that include plenty tank battles, airstrikes and exploding buildings.
The missions themselves are immensely entertaining, and will be instantly familar to anyone who has played Warcraft, Starcraft, Total Annihilation or any of the dozens of other later RTS games out there. The two sides have different but well balanced sets of units, with big slow tanks, machinegun-equipped jeeps, grenadiers and hovering Orca Bombers at the GDI's disposal and smaller, faster tanks, dune buggies, rocket troops, stealth tanks that can turn themselves invisible and best of all a flamethrower tank at the disposal of the Brotherhood. Whilst the graphics are very basic and pixellated, they are also lovingly constructed and animated, with lots of great touches such as exploding tanks leaving smouldering craters in the terrain and solders running around screaming and on fire after being torched by flame tanks.
Missions involve a mix of base defence and base infiltration, and as well as launching tank attacks and airstrikes theres a lot of fun to be had trying to send an APC full of minigunners, special commandos and engineers (who can capture enemy buildings) tearing into an enemy base in an APC in an attempt to cripple it whilst trying to prevent them from getting annihilated in a barrage of laser fire. You also need to construct base defences and facilities, such as barracks, tank factories and a radar outpost to allow access to a minimap of the battlefield. At the same time, its important to secure Tiberium fields for your harvesters to convert into cash, as without them you will become bankrupt and overrun very quickly.
Whilst the enemy AI is reasonable enough if wholly predictable, its most fun playing the game against a real opponent in multiplayer mode. After spending a few minutes adjusting to the basic graphics, the game quickly becomes extremely addictive. The soundtrack also adds to the whole experience immensely, consisting of a full cd of digital audio tracks that range from rousing, epic tracks full of shouts of "FIGHT! WIN! PREVAIL!", funky semi-industrial numbers and all out heavy metal tracks full of great riffs.
Its a fantastic game that would go on to produce hundreds of imitators, and is still immensely playable today. An updated, re-released version can be bought pretty cheap, and comes with the 'Covert Ops' mission pack thrown in free, as well as a very useful option to up the graphics to SVGA, allowing for more of the battlefield to be viewed at any one time. A true classic!
Command & Conquer Classic offers real-time combat. You can expect to see sneak attacks, advanced patrols and entire convoys striking at multiple weak points at once. The emphasis isn't on turn taking or solving tactical problems like fuel, food and bullets, but on real-time thrills, spills and kills. Command & Conquer Classic will allow you to go head-to-head against other commanders in specially designed missions! As most of us know, nothing feels better than blasting your friends into dust, then gloating in triumph afterward. All of this, combined with the ability to play good or evil, modem or network, human or computer AI, makes Command & Conquer Classic a game with tons of replay value.
