Advantages: new missions are challenging and varied, new cutscenes, music and FMV

Disadvantages: no new units or structures

Released back in 1996, 'Covert Operations' is developer Westwood's official expansion pack to their highly acclaimed and seminal Real-time strategy game, 'Command and Conquer'.

The add-on pack offers fifteen extremely difficult single player missions for players to get their teeth into, all of which come with new high quality full motion video briefings and rendered battle cutscenes, as seen in the original game.

There are also ten new multiplayer maps on offer, as well as seven new professoinally produced and hugely enjoyable digital audio tracks included as well. The content is all up to the standard of the original game, although there are no new units or structures included, which would have added further depth and given the game increased longevity and value.

Fifteen new missions may not seem like an awful lot, but the missions themselves (each of which has you play as either the heroic GDI forces or the sinister and insidious Nod side) are varied, highly challenging and well-constructed, making the add-on pack definitely worth getting hold of for fans of the original. There is even a secret level in which you control dinosaurs, which is interesting and good for a quick laugh.

The Covert Operations requires the original version of command and conquer to play, and whilst it can be bought on its own the reissued version of the original game designed to run on Windowns 95 and subsequent Windows operating systems includes the add-on bundled in, and can be bought online very cheaply. A great add-on to a great game, although not the most substantial expansion pack ever, either content-wise or longevity-wise.

Summary: A challenging and good-value add-on pack
