Advantages: Addictive gameplay, better than predecessor, excellent multiplayer

Disadvantages: a couple of small things fixed with Zero Hour expansion pack!

If you thought Red Alert 2 was good, then I recomend you play this excellent game. Since playing the original Red Alert on Playstation, I have been a Command and Conquer fan. It really took hold when I eventually got around to owning Red Alert 2 on PC.

Generals is in a sense an updated version of the Red Alert series (unlike tiberian series of games, too futuristic for me!).
The graphics are better, the gameplay is better and yet it has not lost the Command and Conquer feel.

It has retained some of the better qualities of Red Alert 2 such as the ranking/ veteran system, coupling this with the much improved graphics, new units and updated story ( it has moved away from Russia vs USA cold war type) combines for hours of fun.

There is 3 campaigns: USA, China and the GLA. There is also a single player skirmish mode and of course online/lan multiplayer.
I can personally recommend it just for the online multiplayer, against other people a single match can turn into a marathon game!

Of course this is a war based real time strategy game, so if thats not your sort of game then I would say this is not for you. With regards to game style, I suppose it is similar to the ever popular Age of Empires series, although not so civilization based more about war production!

You may now wonder why I have given it 4 stars, well there were a few things that not only I but my friends felt needed attention. For example there is no way to limit the superweapon construction in multiplayer matches. This leads to rather boring games when each of you has that sort of power in your hands!
We also felt there was not quite enough new units or upgrade options and not enough maps.

Fortunately the Command and Conquer Zero Hour expansion pack has fixed the problems we found and just made the game immense, but as this is a review for the game not the expansion I will disregard this in my rating.

Summary: An excellent game, hours of fun, but only for the RTS fan
