Advantages: hours of fun

Disadvantages: not much scope for replaying

Fast paced it's not, but commandos has that magical quality of grabbing your attention and keeping it fixed intently on the job at hand. Don't expect a shoot-em-up with action hiding around every corner and certainly don't expect to shoot your way through the wermacht - generally, if you're spotted it's game over and reload from savegame time.

As tactical games go its not complex - its got a very simple interface which means the learning curve is refreshingly short - and missions generally have a simple objective with relatively few options for achieving it. The magic lies in the atmosphere - tension abounds and the knack of the game lies in utilising the specialist skills of your elite team to their best effect, and timing.

With such a simple formula, you might think the game lacked depth, but this is far from the truth - just try 'taking out' the guard on the jetty and hiding his body without alerting any number of other goons patrolling the area in overlapping patrol patterns! Simple huh? Not.

I spent days in this game - it looks gorgeous, the characters are interesting (apart from their truly horrendous voice responces which can thankfully be turned off) and the missions are all unique and challenging.

Goon-stabbingly Good!
