RTS games are a dime a dozen and so often they adhere to the well worn clichés of the genre. Cossacks: European Wars, while not hugely inventive, is a fun addition to the canon, and is able to compete with some of the bigger entries such as Rome: Total War and the Command and Conquer series. Although, like most RTS games, it isn't exactly a masterclass of visual wonder, it was pretty good looking for its time; there is lots of character detail and the unit animation in particular is rather good. The explosions and gunshot effects are also intricately detailed, and there isn't an "all catch" animation for all soldiers; they do move independently and ... Read the complete review

I feel Cossacks has go to be one of, if not the best RTS for a long while. There are so many things about Cossacks that make so much better than AOE, or any other good RTS. Firstly there a several types of games, Campaign, Random Map, Missions and the brilliant Multiplayer mode. Random map allows you too begin on a landscape that you choose. You can tell the game whether you want there to be water, a lot of wood, mines etc. and then when the game starts you simply play on that. The other option is to use a designed map, which isn?t great, they play just like a randomly generated map and so this feature wasn't really necessary. Random map ... Read the complete review

Cossacks : European Wars is the latest Real Time Strategy game to hit the shops. The game is based on historical events from the 16th to the 18th century in Europe. Anyone with some historical knowledge will know that this period of history was full of wars and rebellions as states were formed and capitalism began to grow. The game includes huge armies in battle formed of up to an incredible 8,000 units. To begin you choose the type of game you want. Most people will go for single player and be faced with another three choices: Campaign, Single Mission and Random Map. Campaigns are complex collections of missions which you must complete in order to progress. ... Read the complete review

Cossacks – European wars is a strategy game in many ways similar to Age of Empires but in my opinion far better. You can play out historical European battles and play random games. Cossacks is set in 17th & 18th century Europe and you can play as or against any of 16 different nations. One of the advantages it has over AOE in my opinion is that the game will support up to 8000 units, so you versus 1 other player enables you to have 4000 units of troops etc. each or 2000 if there are 4 players and so on. Each nationality has its own technological strengths and weaknesses and to build units, buildings, ships etc. resources are used such as wood, ... Read the complete review

The fact that Real-Time Strategy games always seem to be at the top of PC CD-ROM charts is testimony to their popularity. Ever since “Dune” and “Command and Conquer”, the genre has admitted more and more members, most of which are nothing more than refined derivatives of a recent predecessor. Unfortunately, “Cossacks” cannot entirely escape this trend. I remember reading on some website that the designers’ primary aim was to make a game better than “Age of Empires 2”. Though they have succeeded in this goal, the rather narrow-mindedness of this objective has meant, surprise, surprise, an RTS game high on ... Read the complete review
