Advantages: Brilliant 2d game even today
Disadvantages: Visuals and sounds a little poor but then again game is quite old
Cossacks European Wars is one of the earliest games in the Cossacks series, developed by GSC game world. Graphics are more or less 2D and it was released April 2001.
I can say, even today that it remains one of my favorite strategy games on pc. The game is so simple but still so great.
There are a variety of missions and campaigns, where you get to play and be involved in actual events which occurred in the 1600 to 1700s. Ie the thrity year war, hundred year war etc. These missions are pretty difficult, even on easy mode so may require good practice before attempting. Other modes include a kind of quick game where you can set up and choose maps, number of npc teams and countries to play against along with a difficulty setting. Expect no remorse on the hard setting. I only ever managed to win once even with certain cheats.
The game is set in the 17th and 18th centuries where you can progress with technology through the centuries. There is a huge variety of infantry units, cannons, boats, cavalry and technology upgrades. Ok yes the actaul battle scenes are a little to be desired but bearing in mind the game is around 8 years old, the benefits still outweigh the minor issues.
There are a couple of expansions which have since been released to add to the experience so the cossacks gameplay can continue. Almost all European countries are available to choose from, each with their advantages and disadvantages, so weak points can be exploited. The game is also available online. Overall a good game which holds strong even today.
Summary: Overall a great game to play
