A Great Zombie game for a Great Price

I personally had got Dead Island a few months ago as part of a deal on Steam and got it for about £3 and let me start by saying just how bloody satisfied I am with this deal, I would've easily paid more than triple the price had I known just how good this game is.

The trouble that usually comes with reviewing games is the fact that there's always some criticism that comes to mind when trying to review them, this is because when it comes to games there's always the need for more, more, more! I've tried to shove that aside for now so as to give a review rather than a long list of suggestions.

I'll start off by saying that if zombies are your thing and there's nothing you love more than cutting zombies into tiny little pieces then this is definitely the game for you. Or if you're not too fussed about that, but you do like your open world games where you can explore and find interesting and fun things to do then this is also the game for you. All in all Dead Island is a great game with many aspects built into it which try to appeal to the player and they do so successfully, firstly there's a beautiful scenic world out there for you to explore with the danger of zombies to worry about whilst exploring it. There's a range of weapons for you to make and craft, vehicles for you to drive, tasks for you to complete and best of all this can all be done with one of your pals or others online so you can cut some zombies up together.

The gameplay is fun and exciting and provides a long lifespan of gameplay and allows you to complete the story with different specialist characters or even play the story through again with the same character to make them as powerful as they can be.

Of course there are things which do get tedious and not just zombie games, but many other games do lack this too. Despite the high interactivity and fantastic gameplay the gameplay can get repetitive when you're playing the story through again or having to do tasks for people, it was also a shame to see that with such an immense game world to explore that there wasn't really as many things to interact with or do, but these are just things I personally think the game lack. I still must say that this is a must play game, it may be slightly dated but the quality of the gameplay still remains what it was then, what it is today.

Overall ya just can't go wrong, especially with the great price available for this game. Would be sill to not take advantage of some of the cheap deals out there.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Could have been better, but genuine bargain now.

      Background
      ---------------

Zombie games are not new. Every so often one comes along. Many of them are bad, particularly when they are cash ins. For example, there were two games inspired by AMC's The Walking Dead. The first was excellent, but the "official" game that followed was awful. What makes it even worse than that is the fact that there is already a decent Zombie game out there, and it can be bought for around or under a tenner. And that game is the flawed, but enjoyable Dead Island.

The game begins in a luxury Caribbean resort full of holidaymakers. In the middle of a dance one evening, the madness begins. You wake the following morning to the power being off, and some fairly funky signs that something ain't quite right. Those half-eaten corpses for a start. And what's that noise. And why is it coming closer?

      Gameplay
      ------------

Dead Island is first and foremost an action game. There are RPG elements in it, in the form of three skill trees that you can populate while levelling. There is also a whole host of weapons that can be bought, found or looted. And these can all be improved in a number of different ways. Action is fast and frenetic as there are two principal types of Zombies, the shuffling walkers that represent your typical Zombie, forever looking to grab. Then there's the red bull addicted Infected that sprint everywhere trying to tear you apart. 28 days later, anyone?

You can play as one of four characters. That's the good news. The bad news is that they all could have been written by a twelve year old in his bedroom. There's an unlikable Texan ex-American football player who specialises in throwing stuff at enemies. The Black guy (cue Shaft theme music) that has a bandana, and open leather jacket showing off a pro-wrestling style physique who specialises in - you guessed it - melee. And the two girl characters, a Chinese blades specialist straight out of a Capcom beat em up and an ex-police officer. Both girls are of course, attractive and clad in tight-fitting uniforms.

Each stereotype has one of the three skill threes dedicated to their speciality. That and the occasional phrase and view of your arms is the only real differentiator. There are some very amateurish cut-scenes throughout the game that feature all four characters together in what the is a very light plot. You get throughout the course of the game to discover the source of the infection and struggle to find a way to help isolated pockets of survivors and ultimately a way off the Island.

You have a limited amount of stamina, depleted by using anything except firearms. Those don't show up until well into the game, or at least, they didn't for me as I played as the Texan douche. You are frequently swarmed by Zombies that wonder about the gaming map. If things don't sound very good up to now, this is where everything changes and the game becomes worthy of buying.

Crushing weapons can knock enemies down. They can also break arms and legs, granting extra experience and limiting that creature's attacks. Blades cut. They can sever limbs or take a head off. Things get very gory, very quickly. Many is the time where my character's been left panting, one bar off dead with a whole host of body parts and piles of blood in front of him. Dead enemies yield money, items or weapons.

Weapons can be upgraded. Not just in general power, but also with extra effects that have percentages of firing with each hit. These vary from a bat with nails in which causes extra bleeding, to batteries and wire making an electric weapon that can fry an incoming zombie, to flames that do the obvious and many more.

Every melee weapon has a general durability rating that falls with use and forces you to have a number of backup weapons in reserve. Switching between a preset number is easy enough, and damaged weapons can be repaired for cash at upgrade stations.

      Mr Living dead, I presume?
      ----------------------------------

There are a number of large maps that you get access to as the game progresses. Most of these can be freely travelled to and from up to the game's final act. These include the Paradise resort, a scummy slum-city nearby, the Jungle and a prison. Enemies level up along with you, so you never reach a point where you're bombproof. You can always get swarmed and killed. When you do die, you respawn nearby having lost a percentage of whatever cash you're carrying.

As stated previously, there are pockets of survivors. They tend to have loads of side quests (as well as main ones) for you to embark upon to get mods (Like electricity attacks) for your weapons, cash or weapons themselves. The voice acting is generally good, and there's enough here to keep you nicely involved until the next pointless group cut scene.

Stronger enemies will appear as you progress, including a much bigger, stronger and slower zombie, a fat bloke that spews acid, a walking pustule that explodes like a suicide bomber, a strait-jacketed bald giant and the most pants-wetting enemy, a predator style creature that's gnawed its own hands off who attacks you with the sharpened ends of his forearms.

It's not all zombies. Some humans have grouped into pockets of undesirables who will shoot you on sight. That's your primary source of firearms. You will find additional missions scattered about, and most maps have drivable vehicles leading to a squash-a-thon.

The game's graphics are generally very good. Rain will occasionally deluge you in your exploration and although there is a fair amount of repetition, you generally don't notice it. Standard enemies can be avoided by climbing on cars or walls. Useful for when you get swarmed. And you will get swarmed. Loud noises will attract attention.

Infected will generally follow you, though they can't climb the game's many ladders. You can do a fair amount of damage from a distance, particularly with points in the "Boomerang" perk which means thrown weapons return to you. There are also heavy objects that can be chucked, from building blocks to gas cylinders, Molotov cocktails and homemade grenades. And firearms, of course.

In summary it is an enjoyable game, if an exceedingly bloody one. And at these sort of prices, it is now something of a bargain. A worthy three out of five stars.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

For someone who loves horror games and movie I recommend it.

Dead island is a horror survival game.Placed on a small island on the south east part of Asia.

        Story:
There isn't much of a story at the beginning you are one of four tourists (every one of the has there special abilities and weapons ) on a island hotel. After a long night of parting you find your self in a hotel room. You don't see any persons and walk down the corridor and see blood and dead people .You are attacked by zombies and bitten. You are immune of the zombies but that doesn't mean you cant die....The story gets better the longer you play

        Gameplay:
The goal is to complete quests to get out of the island. There are two types of quests main and secondary.Main are harder and when you complete them you advance. The secondary rewarded you with different items. The gameplay is good it isn't focused so much on guns like it is on meel weapons.
To make sure of that you can only cary 60 bullets for pistol and rifle, shotguns only have 21 bullets.
There is also a rage meter witch can triggered and increases damage.Every character has its on rage type from kicking them to trowing knifes etc.
There are several zombie types from walkers and runners to brutes. You need to find your tactic to survival
There is also a crafting table where you upgrade and repair weapons.Blueprints are also very important. You combine two weapons to make one unique weapons My favorite is the baseball-chainsaw.And also there is a car driving over zombies witch is nice.Overall the game has a leveling system with a skill three. The map is very big to allow many places to be explored.

        Graphics:
They aren't nothing new.The zombies look very dead like and the blood flows like in real time and looks very good
        Sound:
Sound is very important to this game.It makes a atmosphere witch is movie like. The sound of the zombies is good.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Bloody, but beautiful game!

Dead Island, the first - person zombie game. It is published by Deep Silver on the 9th of September 2011. When they published the trailer I fell in love with the idea. The trailer was absolutely brilliant and it did receive the deserved awards for that. But is the gameplay just as good?

        **Story**

It is set on a tropical island, it used to be a paradise till the chaos starts. Zombies start to break out and only few people seem to be immune to the infection. In the beginning cinematic you clearly see how chaos suddenly breaks out, you see the cinematic through the eyes of a drunk guy. While you are in one of the clubs the zombies start to appear and the game starts. You start with playing the prologue which you have to do on your own. I love the atmosphere of the game since the first minutes I was playing. It has this scary and lonely effect. You are in a hotel which is completely abandoned, at least that is what you think. Soon you will find yourself running away from zombies and so you get rescued by other survivors. The game now really begins.

        **Gameplay**

To talk more in detail about the controls and gameplay, you move your character with the basic WASD movement controls and using weapons is by clicking the left mouse button. At the early stages of the game there were some annoying bugs with movement. There were some serious issues at the release of the game, but in my opinion, they fixed it good enough with some patches. The combat is somehow fun and it feels alright. You can hit the zombies on different body parts which results in de-heading a zombie or to cut of their arms. You do more damage on for example the head. While you are doing missions and quests you will find some other survivors which could lead to a couple of side quests. The whole island is basically filled with zombies, weapons, money and items. You can use those items and the money for upgrading or repairing your weapons. There are also different zombies, some stronger than others, which makes it more difficult in some situations.

The atmosphere there was in the beginning stays during the whole game. Although you are chased by zombies every now and then, you are still on the beautiful tropical island. The game can be scary sometimes, especially when you have to enter different rooms which are locked. You have to break your way through by moving the mouse forward at a given moment. You will sometimes be shocked when a zombie is waiting around the corner, and these moments were brilliant. The characters in the game are not outstanding or at least not remarkable, but they are alright.

        **Multiplayer**

The Multiplayer/Co-op mode is one of the best features of this game and they did a good job with it. You just open your save game and you start where you ended the last time you played. Then every time you are in a place where another player is currently too, then you can join each other. Of course you can make use of the lobby where you can join people yourself, but the other option is so great because those people are just as far with the game as you. Also when you do choose to join people by searching the list of people and they are further than you, you can join them, but it will not save it on your game file.

        **Graphics**

The graphics are beautiful, the way the zombies are modelled is absolutely stunning and it makes them really scary. The island is perfectly made, the graphics have wonderful textures and they tried and, in my opinion, succeeded with optimizing the detail as much as they could. Even when you watch from a far distance the landscapes and the buildings are in great detail. The blood effects and cut-off body parts flying around are fascinating, this adds so much to these kind of games. All by all beautiful graphics for the time it was released and they are still great.

To conclude, Dead Island is for the features and gameplay it gives you a great choice. Even though you don't like those kind of games, I would recommend to at least give this game a try. But for the zombie-fans this will be one of the best experiences you will ever have when it is about this genre.
