Advantages: Great playable game
Disadvantages: Whats does the name really mean
Sometimes you wonder whether games producers know what they are doing after all they want you to buy games. Why then produce a game so addictive you spend all your free time (and a bit more besides playing it) and do not then have time to buy anything else. Deus Ex does that because Deus Ex is an excellent game. Indeed more than that it redefines the excellence of game play. Its difficult to know where to start to describe this game. It is played in the first person though there is a sinister commentary going on in the third person. Missions are approached different ways, from being a street wise, stealthy agent to being a gung-ho firefight warrior. You can interact with all the characters along the way, sometimes gaining needed knowledge only after you have had a conversation a few times. I believe that the endings are different depending on how you play it but I have not got that far yet. There are various points in the game where you make choices such as either to trust your brother or your agency. You can rule the world or choose to destroy technology and send everyone back to the stone ages. The game relates to events which have occurred in real world history and in real places like New York or Hong Kong. Each time I have played it I have found something new and interesting. The graphics are fantastic too being very atmospheric and with the sound really draw you into the game. I know its cliched but you do feel drawn into the game play. After you have completed your training programme and play for real there is a proper sense of fear and foreboding as you play. I used to enjoy the Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake type games but they pale next to Deus Ex.

- 09/01/02 I remember when I bought Deus Ex, I immediately tried to find out where the name came from, because I wasn't even sure how to pronounce it. I sound found that the pronunciation is 'Dayus Ex' and that it comes from the phrase 'Deus Ex Machina'.
This apparently comes from Greek Drama and describes impossible situations being resolved by gods, which where created visually with complicated scaffolding, machinery, and lot of rope.
Literally the phrase translates to 'God from the machine'. Pretentious to use it for the name of the game, maybe |
