Advantages: Good plot, captures the style of the films, good graphics and gameplay

Disadvantages: Not much variety of locations, repetitive in parts

Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza is a first-person shooter game for the PC developed by Piranha Games in 2002. The game expands on the plot of the first film in the popular Die Hard series. In the film, Bruce Willis is NYPD officer John McClane who finds himself in the huge Nakatomi Plaza building in New York just as a group of international terrorists take the building hostage in order to steal millions of dollars from the building's vault. McClane then takes down the terrorists one by one in order to foil their plans and rescue his wife who is among the hostages. The game follows largely the same plot, but with plenty of additional tasks and missions thrown in to fill out the game. Missions not seen in the film include escorting civilians through burning parts of the building and saving various hostages.

The plot is entertaining, and the additional missions mean that although the game retains the style of the film, it is not too similar to it. The graphics are reasonably good for a game released almost 10 years ago, and the variety of weapons is excellent. Another nice touch is that as well as your various weapons, you also have a Zippo lighter and a walkie-talkie which come in handy in many of the missions.

A drawback of the game for me was that the variety of locations wasn't great. For a game set exclusively in an office building, the makers have clearly done the best they can to remedy this, including sewer levels, roof levels etc, but in the end the scenery is all quite similar and many levels seem a bit repetitive for this reason. However there are some levels which really set the game apart from other first person shooters, for example one which is borrowed from the film in which McClane is barefoot and has to manouver across broken glass without bleeding to death.

Overall, the game is very entertaining and well worth a play, with good graphics and good gameplay, although in some parts it does seem a little repetitive.

Summary: An entertaining game but not outstanding
