Advantages: Fairly long campaign. Some weapon variety.
Disadvantages: Boring online play.
This is a far cry from the classic Doom games which started the shooting genre as we know it today.
The monsters, no longer squares which make cheesy growling noises, are all very well modelled and varied. They are genuinely frightening when coupled with the dark and sinister atmosphere which is maintained throughout the whole game. Sweamish and easily frightened? This game may not be for you, the experience much like a horror movie. See things moving in the shadows? They may just be tricks of the light, something which Doom 3 plays upon a lot.
Underneath the satanic scaryness is a farily generic shooter with all of the weapons you would expect, such as Machine Guns, Rocket Launchers and Pistols. The only interesting weapon is the BFG, which is more of a panic button then a proper weapon.
The multiplayer was the well-loved feature of the original games, but it isn't as good here. Obviously things have improved since the original games, but the maps are lacking any sort of originality and people tend to just run around in circles shooting constantly at things rather than taking cover and tactically assaulting people. Not many people play the game online anymore due to the sheer number of superior online games.
A decent game with decent graphics. Nothing amazing or revolutionary about it though.
Summary: Not for the faint hearted or hardcore FPS fans, but a good play nontheless.
