Released on PC way back in the early 90s, 'Doom', the successor to the tremendously entertaining WW2 shooter 'Wolfenstein 3D', took the gaming world by storm. Following an invasion by the residents of Hell, mankind has been all but wiped out and it is up to you as the last marine left alive to fight your way through the demon-infested human colonies on Jupiter's moons Phobos and Deimos before plunging into Hell itself to repel the otherworldly menace. The game's simple 3D engine does not allow for looking up or down, but this works to its advantage, allowing for a very pure gaming experience devoid of distractions in which you can concentrate wholly on ... There was a time not so long ago when the concept of saying what Doom is would've sounded stupid, but now you could have mainly played recent PC games and 32/64/128 bit console games and may not know of the game. Basically, it's Quake, minus the ability to look up or down. The game uses sprites, so there can be huge numbers of monsters after your throat at the same time, unlike the original Quake, where the PC's limitations at the time limited the number of enemies on screen to two or three at a time. In Doom there can be dozens. There is an immense sense of satisfaction gained when you run into a zombie or ten wielding a chainsaw. I can't explain ... Read the complete review

Doom is one of those milestone games, one of the big moments in gaming history that, one way or the other, changed how the hobby evolved. I think it's safe to say that this was the original 3D first person shooter, and for a long time it was the best. But how does it stand up now, against the likes of Halo, Half-Life and that other one with the gears? Doom puts you behind the eyes of a space marine - the only survivor of a mission that went terrifyingly wrong. Stranded on a spacestation with only demons and zombies for company, the only way out is to blast your way through. Armed with a pistol, shotgun, chain gun, rocket launcher, plasma cannon and chainsaw ... Read the complete review

Doom first appeared on the PC in December 1993 (what a year that was). Since then a version of Doom has graced just about every single other gaming format. Sega's 32X and Saturn, Atari's Jaguar, Sony's Playstation, Doom has even appeared on the state of the art Apple Macs. A SNES version (considered almost impossible to be converted onto a 16-bit machine) was released in 1995. I brought it! I had never played anything remotely similar before and it was the first time I had ever played Doom. I even remember the advertising campaign for the SNES game very well also, especially since there was a report about it in a newspaper. Adjacent to a church was a ... Read the complete review

A classic. If you haven't played this game then you are a disgrace to First Person Shooters. Doom is seen by some as the first of its type, at the time of release, gamers were eager to get their hands on this game they had heard so much about, the game that was actually '3d'. Over a decade and a half on, many still get the same immense feeling of satisfaction when they blast the guts off a vicious zombie or fireball throwing imp. The makers, id, of the Doom series worked long and hard on the game and thought completely of the player when making decisions, whether they're about aesthetics, controls or just the sheer amount gore. The game has a huge 5 different ... Read the complete review
