Advantages: Innovative and new titles for its time

Disadvantages: Not around long enough

Released in 1999, the Sega Dreamcast was the next generation, a video game console developed in attempt to gain back market share which was lost due to the poor reception of the Sega Saturn.

At the time, the Dreamcast not only offered an impressive selection of arcade hits but also new and innovative titles. Classics that come to mind include Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Shenmue, Jet Set Radio and Tokyo Bus Guide.

Undoubtedly Shenmue was an impressive game and still remains a classic, however despite what some may consider the Dreamcast to be under rated, there are perhaps a few reasons for its failure.

Having played most of the top Dreamcast games available at the time most games were ports of arcade hits and therefore offered little replay value. In comparison, the original PlayStation had a host of RPG titles from Square Enix and other developers.

Upon release, initially I was swayed by the excitement of a new console. However although the Dreamcast was an impressive console it did not match the replay value the PlayStation.

Summary: Good for its time.
