... radar facilities to give you a tactical overview of the battleground and refineries and harvesters to collect the spice and turn it into credits, allowing you to keep on building and manufacturing. Much of the levels are made up of desert, and bases can only be set up on rocky outcrops, whilst vast Sandworms rove about under the desert surface, waiting to swallow up your units whole if allowed to get close enough. It was a revolutionary game at the time, and in 2000 Westwood decided to give it a new lease of life, wit...more

Crowned Review DUNE 2000 (PC): Get spaced out on spice! (1729 words)

Dune originated from the imagination of author Frank Herbert, way back in 1963. Through a series of books a story unfolded that would lead to a cult following, and was later transformed into a film, television series and numerous computer games. Writing a review on one of the games could easily lead into a massive biography of this great writer and spurn numerous reviews on the various visual delights that sprang from his imagination. I will try to stick to the game, although some of the story needs to be told. If you want to know more about the books, films, etc I suggest you look them up separately! Background story **************** Set in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A by-the-numbers remake (431 words)

Back in the early 90s, back when the Command and Conquer series was just a twinkle in developer Westwood Studios' eye, the team released Dune 2, a seminal real time strategy game set in Frank Herbert's Dune universe that would act as a template for the Command and Conquer games and for the thousands of imitators that followed in the series' wake. Dune 2 had you playing as one of three Houses, the Atriedies, Harkonnen or Ordos, who were all fighting for control of Arrakis, a desert planet rich in Spice, a rare resource used as spaceship fuel. The game had you building windfarms to genereate electricity, barracks and vehicle factories to create troops and tanks, radar ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review DUNE 2000 (PC): A little outdated real-time strategy game (1421 words)
by - written on 03/10/01 (Very useful, 71 readings)
Rating:

I have always been interested in strategy games, playing classics such as Civilization, Warlords and many other turn based strategy games. Additionally I played some games on the old Amiga that introduced a real time element - Battle Isle is a good example of this. Dune 2 was the first strategy game that I can remember that provided a real time game and added elements of design and production while also including a story based on a book. (Incidently Dune 1 was has nothing to do with Dune 2 and was produced by a different company - I seem to remember it being a graphical adventure game). Westwood Studies released Dune 2 in 1992. They decided to remake ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review I was expecting a little more from the re-make of the first ... (637 words)
by - written on 16/05/01 (Very useful, 76 readings)
Rating:

This game is very stereotypical of Westwood studios strategy games. There are a wide range of units available, three houses to choose from: the Ordos, the Harkonnen and the Atredies. Two dune games came before this one there was dune 2 in 1993 which is almost the same as dune 2000 and even further back was dune (the original) which was more to do with spice mining and Fremen warriors. Dune 2000 barely touches on the storyline of the film, dune in which there were no Ordos, Atredies forces were almost destroyed and they won only with an army of Fremen and in the film sandworms are ridden. The actual game play is quite good the graphics are better than that ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review DUNE 2000 (PC): Flaming Dune (611 words)

"My time on Dune has been short yet I have accomplished much. Since being placed in charge of Atreides forces my success has brought me promotion. My first quest was to stem the evil Harkonnen forces, which was easily acheived as their forces were weak. After establiching my base I quickly built a Spice Refinery so that we could harvest Dune's valuable resource. For those who don't know, the Spice Melange has powerful qualities, kind of mind altering I think you Earthlings would describe it. It is the most valuable resource in the known univers and so the three houses battleing on Dune for it are very ruthless. My own house, ...  Read the complete review
