Advantages: Great game and good FMV with super realistic controls

Disadvantages: Spec hungry

I must admit, when I saw this game on the shelf at the local software store, I was immediately intrigued by its huge packaging. The first release was a three ring binder containing over 500 pages. I thought to myself, wow, a real combat flight sim. And that's exactly what it is. The boys at Microprose have delivered an excellent sequel to the beloved Falcon 3.0. Graphics are intense as well as gameplay. The flight model for the F-16 could not possibly be any closer than it is to the real thing. I currently have a PII 400 with 128mb of ram and 8meg AGP video card with a Voodoo 2 12Mb in parallel. The game is extremely smooth on my machine but still a little choppy when flying through the remains of a former enemy and when crashing (which happens alot because of the accurate flight model). Supported are 3dfx and Direct3d. The only downfall is the bugginess of the game. It crashes(the game itself, not the jet)alot. All the time in fact. I believe that Microprose rushed this thing out of development to get in on the 98 Christmas season and to head of Janes F-15 ( which is by far a better playing game). Even with the bugs, and the unusual purple sparks when crashing, and the impossible landings ( I have landed only about 33 percent of the time successfully) it is an excellent sim especially now that it is £20 at most places. You may not get the three ring binder that came with the first release (although I still see it everywhere) you will get a game that will keep you busy and away from other games for a long time to come. Only advice is that you have the recommended system not the minimum.

I think the reason why the game crashes so much is because it tries to achieve too much, often when in the heart of enemy territory verging towards China on some missions I increase the radar range to 40 miles to find I am surrounded by about 100 enemy fighters forcing me to go below 100ft to be invisible to radar though dangerously close to AA guns, and then I check my Air-Ground radar and there are 1000s of tanks and troops, all of which have their own AI, objectives etc. and it tends to send the machine into overload and sometimes if I'm unlucky it not only freezes the game but also my PC.

I had the same problem with landings as you but if you keep practicing your landing rate (safe) will increase to about 80% (thats what mine is on about now, but still dangerous). Have you noticed that if you follow ATCs orders you will be flying around the airfield forever, I usually declare an emergency and get priority to land lol.

Being interested in real military aviation I already knew what a buddy spike did but could never get it to work, I always commanded my wingman to laser designate say a factory for my Laser guided bombs and they just fell nowhere so now I just designate my own with the advantage of TIALD (thermal imaging airborn laser designation).
