Advantages: Lot of control of your character and choices
Disadvantages: If you don't like turn-based games you may not like it
The first time I saw this for sale was quite a while after it's release, somehow I had heard nothing about the game before but thought it seemed the sort of game I would like and bought it, I wasn't disappointed.
The first time I played it I thought the controls were a bit strange and that the game played fairly slowly, however once I had played it for a while I realised that all it took was a bit of getting used to. After playing for a while I really got into the story and enjoyed the fact that there were so many different choices you could make during the game as to how you wanted to play your character, you could choose what skills to change, what sort of character you start as and quite a large variety of other things, the game remained interesting throughout because it allowed me to choose things each time I advanced a level rather than a game like Baldur's Gate where the vast majority of changes are made automatically. I also found it fairly replayable due to the fact that you can react differently to different situations depending on what you wanted to do.
Overall I found this the best RPG in a long-time and it still remains one of my favourites along with Planescape: Torment and Diablo 2 (though not an rpg in the same way). If you see it for sale, try it, despite it's age it still remains a great game.
