Advantages: Epic, outstanding visuals, non-linear gameplay, real time or turn based gaming
Disadvantages: Occassional crashes, level caps, can be periods of lots of wandering around
This is the best and worst game you can imagine. It is a 5 star product but also a nil star product. Confused? Then let me try and explain with this review for the PS3 version.
The minute you're bombarded with archaic music from the 1940's you know you are in for one very surreal experience. Without giving too much of the plot away you begin as a baby and the game cleverly introduces you to the control system which soon becomes second nature.
Before you can blink you're suddenly a teenager almost ready to get ready for your ascribed career in a nuclear shelter.
Ah, but that would be rather dull would it not? No, instead you find yourself wandering a nuclear wasteland and with a tiny clue of where you're supposed to be going. It's then that it hits you. The sheer beauty of this corrupt little world is quite staggering. Strange whizzing radio robots pollute the sky's airwaves with a series of patriotic messages and then you truly begin your epic journey.
The game is very much in the typical Oblivion mould but without the swords/sorcery angle. You get to use conventional weapons as well as some truly original ones which all result in one thing. A most grisly death!
This game is well deserving for an 18 certificate and there are some grisly goings on in post-nuclear Washington.
However, the best thing about this game is freedom. You can be the most saintly creature ever to walk God's Earth or you can be the most evil piece of detritus you can imagine. It's up to you and there lies the beauty.
Quite simply it is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever had the pleasure of playing.
There are a couple of niggles though. First is when the PS3 suddenly seizes up. This is most annoying when you've forgotten to save! Second is an irritating cap on the levels. Personally I would have preferred to have total freedom on this aspect although I understand there is a download for the PC/Xbox to updgrage another 10 levels. I'm sure the PS3 can't be too far behind.
'But why are you calling it the worst game as well?' I hear you cry. Easy. Forget about eating, sleeping and basically living. This game is addictive beyond imagination and you will lose all track of the real world. That's why I'm anti as well as pro Fallout 3.
So do I recommend Bethesda's masterpiece? Most heartily yes, but as long as you're fully aware you will no longer possess a real life!
Summary: One of the best games I've seen (Ever!)
