Advantages: graphics
Disadvantages: gameplay
It’s coming home, it’s coming home, football’s coming home – or so someone thinks. Anyhow, if you watched England’s dismal performance in Euro 2000 and thinking that you could do better, berated your local team for losing a two-goal advantage or generally enjoy computer football games, then FIFA 2000 could well be the choice for you – that is, if it wasn’t so poor a game. I am sure that you’ll find plenty of reviews of this product claiming it to be the best PC soccer game ever. Well, even if this is the case – and I’m still sceptical – that’s hardly an accolade, is it? When was the last time that a top quality footy game hit the PC? Was it Sensible Soccer? I don’t really remember that far back! FIFA 2000 is graphically very good. The introduction features a digital Robbie Williams (as if one wasn’t enough!) and demonstrates the EA Sports technology. However, as with most EA Sports games, they forgot to add the gameplay – again. If you’ve played FIFA 98: Road to World Cup, or any of the FIFA series since, then you’ll be thinking that you put your old FIFA CD-ROM into the drive, and not your new FIFA 2000 version. You can hardly tell the difference and for a full-price £25 game this is absolutely criminal. Also, the difficulty settings are far too easy and you’ll soon be beating Brazil, playing Mali, on the most challenging setting. Once you’ve mastered the controls then no team will hold any resistance against your team. FIFA 2000 feels and looks good for about twenty minutes, before you realised that there isn’t actually gameplay. Unfortunately for the people who bought this product it seems as though EA Sports never got round to releasing a gameplay add-on CD-ROM. I would buy this product if I had won the lottery and couldn’t think of anything else to spend my money on. Actually, I am sure that
I would find something better to spend my money on. Do not buy this product unless you want about twenty minutes of entertainment. This is yet another money-grabbing, commercial game from EA Sports. I will not hold my breath in waiting for FIFA 2001. Or should I say FIFA 2000 v1.2?
