Advantages: Everything!
Disadvantages: Nothing!
When I was introduced to this around 10 years ago, I hadn't even heard of the Final Fantasy series of games. Boy am I glad that person showed me this, had they of not then I may of missed out on the greatest series of games ever put into production!
At it's time, this was the best looking thing on the PS1 (if not any console). The scene when you first see Midgar from afar literally took my breath away the first time I saw it. Nowadays we may at the character design and scoff at it's blockyness, but at the time there was nothing else like it.
Gameplay wise, this can keep you entertained for weeks. The main story alone probably takes upwards of 20 hrs to complete. But if you want to level up all materia, collect The Knights of the Round materia, kill all weapons, collect all master weapons etc etc, then you can easily clock up well over 100 hours of gamplay time. There is so much to achieve that there is unlimited replay value. 10 years on and I still play this game!
The turn based Battle System is faultless, and the difficulty level of the bosses and enemies is perfect.
The character development is fantastic and the storyline really sucks you in. The story twists and turns and the tradegy that occurs part of the way through the game still strikes me!
This was the first truly modern RPG.
A five star rating for this game is simply not high enough.
The best game ever made? Probably.
Summary: I cannot praise this game enough
