Advantages: Huge story, massive value for money, a classic game
Disadvantages: simplistic gameplay, repetative
If you've never played Final Fantasy VII then you really must. This is one of the truly classic games that almost every computer gamer has played.
I've played both the PC and the Playstation versions and there's not a lot of difference. I think the graphics and music may be better on the Playstation but the PC gaming experience is excellent.
The actual game play is almost laughably simple and the learning curve is not steep. I'm not going to touch on the mechanism of the game play as it's really not what the game is about. This is a game that anyone could play. The attraction of the game is therefore not in the game play itself but in the environment of the game and the epic story that the game tells.
And the story is something rather special. This is a game that made me cry. This is a game that will break your heart but you will come back to it because you will want to see the story to the end.
We begin following Cloud. A spiky haired mercenary working with a group of eco-terrorists to bring down a corrupt regime that is destroying the planet. The eco-terrorists seem to be good people but the game makes it clear fairly early on that their methodology is flawed and one of their attacks has terrible consequences.
It's at this point that the story takes a radical turn and spreads out to it's epic scale touching on man's relationship with his environment, the history of the planet, Gaea, on which the game is set and the troubled history of Cloud himself.
Treat yourself to Final Fantasy VII. It's not expensive and it there is 100 hours plus of enjoyment in it.
Summary: You have to play it, if only so you know what everyone else is talking about.
