Advantages: new 3d match engine, new playable leagues

Disadvantages: there are not enough hours in the day!

I'm not much of a gamer but one game that had me glued in front of my PC for much of my teenage years and a fair few of my adult years was the Football Manager (formerly Championship Manager) series.

Everyone you speak to will tell you how man hours they've wasted taking a non league side to Premiership glory. Being a Saints fan Football Manager is my only chance to see Southampton lift the Champions League trophy!

This brings us on to the latest edition of this football simulation, Football Manager 2009. Because Sports Interactive release a version of FM every year it is difficult to find ways of improving the game but this year they have really hit the jackpot with a 3D match engine that allows you to watch your team in real time. Although the graphics aren't in the same league as Fifa Soccer or the like, they are a vast improvement on the old 2D engine.

The other new feature is the addition of a press confrence feature before and after each important match. The best thing about the recent editions of Football manager is the fact that you can go to various internet sites (www.fmlive.co.uk or www.sortitoutsi.net) and download face packs and other graphics to enhance your game play even more.

Summary: Be prepared to waste a lot of hours trying to make Torquay United the rulers of the football world!
