Advantages: Good Graphics
Disadvantages: Uncontrollable
Ford Racing is a racing game, as the name suggests, based purely on Ford racing vehicles. Mainly racing versions of well-known road cars. 12 different vehicles in all are present, Fiesta, Ka, Mondeo, Focus and Escort to name just a few. You can have up to eight cars in a race, all the same, randomly selected from a particular class of car or from a number of classes. Three tracks are available at the start. There are 10 tracks in the game altogether but you have to earn access to these. The game is generally played in a career mode, where you start off with the lowest class of car, racing in the lower classes and as you win championships, which by the way consist of three races per championship, you are awarded slightly faster racing cars. Graphics are very good, cars are well drawn and detailed and the tracks are also well drawn and realistic in appearance. They are not familiar tracks, but according to the manual they are real world ones. Sound is good, but nothing more than should be expected. Driver A.I. is pretty good, cars don’t just ram into you in complete oblivion and as this is a simulation car control is essential. The problem is however, car control. This game has obviously been designed around a steering wheel controller and it shows. If you play with joystick or game pad, the car has to be fully controlled with the D-pad. That means steering, brakes and throttle and if you are like me and find this configuration impossible, then your stuck because the options do not allow you to change it. Keyboard play is equally impossible as the cars are not immediately sensitive to the key push. As I have not got a steering wheel, I can’t say whether this improves control of the cars or not, but certainly by using either keyboard or game pad/joystick, this game is practically unplayable. This is a shame really, because from the quality of the rest of the game, a lot of effort has gone into it. A
Pentium 200mmx, 32MB of ram and a decent 3D card should take care of the PC specs if you fancy a try.
