I'd see my ship heading straight up at full pelt whilst I was choosing a local system to jump to, I'd turn off the engines, turn the ship around and have a go at shooting some of the pursing ships down, all the while my ship is continuing to go upwards with momentum thanks to the wonderful physics. As soon as I was in space, WHACK, I'd hit the jump button and I'd be in the next system in a flash. Turning the ship around I'd look to see i...more

Crowned Review Frontier - Elite 2 (PC): Look Upward and Share the Wonders I've Seen (901 words)

The sequel to the best-selling space trade and combat simulator ‘Elite,’ voted best game of the 80s on the BBC Micro and early Amigas, Frontier surpasses its predecessor in every way. And a good job too, considering it was five years in the making. David Braben’s epic and mind-numbingly vast game puts you in the pilot seat of your own space craft, docked in one of several selectable locations throughout the Milky Way galaxy. And that’s it. From the start, the choice of gameplay is yours: will you lead the quiet life, trading between star systems to afford those upgrades and larger, faster ships? Or will you do some illegal mining and blast the cops out of the ...  Read the complete review

Frontier - Elite 2 was the sequel to the popular space trading game, Elite. The original Elite features wireframe graphics and whilst it was good fun at the time, lacked the diversity that it needed. Frontier changed everything! It now featured a fully 3d engine that allowed the player to fly the ships in 3d space and see the other ships rendered in all their glory! There was something wonderful about seeing the first fully 3d space station and docking with it (even better if you managed to do it manually!). This game also was the first Elite to allow players to venture inside a planets atmosphere and land on a planet. I have wonderful memories ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Frontier - Elite 2 (PC): The best game in the world ever? (580 words)

Many moons ago there was a game called Elite, released on such machines as the BBC Micro, and what a game it was! Modern gamers may wonder what on earth I'm talking about, but to other, older members of the gaming society, Elite may well be ranked as one of their favourite games. The magic of the game has never quite been matched, and although technology wise it is very basic, Elite is an all time classic. It was a hunt for a modern day version of Elite that led me to this game, Elite 2 - Frontiers. Even this game isn't particularly modern, first being released in 1993, and although there is another later game in the Elite series, it is generally ...  Read the complete review

When I look back at my life, I realise that I have wasted an awful lot of it. Why? There are many reasons but one of them is playing computer games in the late 80's and early 90's. I remember getting that second hand Amiga 500 along with a bunch of games. Elite took pride of place amonst these. This Firebird game was cutting edge stuff when it came out. Just mentioning the Thargiods and their polygon ships can still make me cringe; and the thought of manual docking terrifies me. Oops! Sorry, I'm starting to ramble. Basically, Elite was a superb game where you were given a spaceship equivilent of a ford escort mark I and had to make money, ...  Read the complete review
