Advantages: Gameplay, graphics, sound, weapons.
Disadvantages: Known to have some serious bugs BUT none that I have come across, maybe I'im lucky!
So Gears has been out for absolutely ages on XBOX 360, and its been highly known as one of the best games on the genre - if not the best game. So many of my friends had this one and recommended it when released on PC. I didn't get round to buying it as I was working my way through other PC games which I personally found more appealing.
How wrong I was. Now that I finally purchased this game, I think it is possibly my favourite and I can't leave it alone at the moment. Now if you go to a website such as Amazon and check out the PC review for the game, there are many complaints about it having bugs etc. Now I can only write my review based on my personal experience - and while of course I don't think the reviewers are lying, I personally have not come across a single issue with this game so far. Maybe Im just lucky.
In the character your a soldier named Marcus who gets let out of prison early to come and help the team fight off these invasions of enemies called 'Locusts'.
The game is so simple in its essence that I find it hard to believe how fun and rewarding it is. The game is basically a cover and shoot game, such a simple idea - but so efficiently implemented. I never thought you could have so much fun with the same cover and shoot system over and over again. Of course you are not just limited to cover and shoot, you can roam as you please in battle zones, but you won't last very long.
The game has a lovely array of weapons, and there is a very rewarding reload system on the weapons whereby if you time it perfectly, you reload is about twice as fast, so you can get on with the action quicker. This works tremendously well.
The story in the game is OK. It's a bit here and now as opposed to really unveilling what is going on in the long run, but I think the gameplay is so good that it makes up for the slightly weak story thus far.
The graphics are absolutely fantastic. There is a lot of attention to detail, and your team and the enemy both look fantastic - in different ways of course. Your team are bulked up human soldiers with lots of facial detail and lots of detail on the apparel they wear. The enemy are these ugly species called Locust, and they do look rather terrifying - giving the game an intense and enjoyable feel.
The sound too is great. And the music that comes on when you have finally defeated a group of locust in a battlezone is highly satisfying to say the least. The weapons sound really good and the enemy make highly relevant ugly noises. It's all just really well done.
Because its a cover and shoot game, there is less of the 'flanking' and other terms you associate with enemy AI. Nevertheless the AI works well and when playing the game on 'Hardcore' it certainly is a challenge, but a do-able one, which is important. I really can't imagine how hard 'Insane' must be. I think I'l leave that one alone for now!!
Im hesitant about recommending this game on PC purely because of the amount of bug issues that has been reported, to the extent of some people saying its the most bugged game ever! But from personal experience, and that is of course all I can go on, I haven't had a single issue, and I have found this game absolutely amazing, and would highly recommend it based on the rewarding gameplay alone!
Summary: An unbelievably rewarding cover and shoot game, simple at heart but so well executed
