Giants:Citizen Kabuto is one of those rare games that garners crticial acclaim yet fails to sell through at retail. Every time I visit CEX in London's Tottenham Court Road, there is a stack of Giants games, unsold and unloved. I've owned a copy of the game for months, but it looked a bit weird and sat on my shelf gathering dust. I just got a new video card, a Geforce 2 Ultra, and had heard that Giants was power-hungry so it seemed like a good time to try it out. The first thing that surprised me was the off-beat humour and regional English accents that the Meccs and Smarties have during the cut-scenes. The missions are quite varied, but very ... From playing this game you know that there is a bit of Shiny in it. Planet Moon is a group of ex-Shiny people, responsible for great, but unpopular games such as MDK and Sacrifice. Giants: Citizen Kabuto has what every Shiny game has, action, originality and humour. However it will also cursed with it not selling many copies, indeed, with only 2 opinions of this game at the time of writing, is testimony enough. This is a shame because Giants was one of the best games of 2000. This game was fun from beginning to end, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Starting of with a delightful menu screen with good lighting you are introduced into a game of strangeness. You begin as the Meccs who turn out to be some dozy cockney soldiers with holiday in mind. They are interrupted from there flight to there holiday break to join an adventure. Saving some little ugly minions from death, torture and pretty much stupidity. Filled with one liners and great pre-cut scenes between levels this game shocked me as totally different to what I expected. There is seriousness but you forget where when the stories are flowing more. This is more of the sequel to MDK ... Read the complete review

Originality is sometimes treated very unfairly by us consumers. Don't believe me? Look at Looking Glass Software, the makers of the almighty Thief series, System Shock, Terra Nova and others. All of them were different to what people are used to. The company actually thought of new ideas and used them well, but did many people buy the games? Nope. That's why the company had to close down. Just for making something different. Now you may wonder why I bothered to talk about Looking Glass for a whole paragraph. The answer is that Giants: Citizen Kabuto is in the vein of Looking Glass. It is a different game, with LOADS of great ideas that have never ... Read the complete review
