      Disadvantages

Mildly entertaining for a short time, but only if you've played every other Grand Theft Auto game.

London eh? A nice place, but you wouldn't want to live there. Particularly if you suffer from claustrophobia of any kind or didn't relish the prospect of being wedged into a low ceilinged mini-train every morning, ending up having to force your way past tourists to get anywhere at all, and choking on car fumes. But things could be worse - you could actually be living inside GTA London 1969, a place where the streets are less crowded, but rather dangerous, given the fact that you'd have put up with deranged drivers zooming around, mowing people down at random, blowing up cars and generally causing chaos. Still, it's all in the name of sixties nostalgia so that's okay then.

You've probably got an idea of what to expect from GTA London. Specifically, plenty of zooming around in various sixties style cars, doing jobs for London gangsters, evading the rozzers, and generally causing chaos on the streets of the capital. And in this respect, GTA London delivers, but not for long, since there's only enough game there to last you for four hours or so in single player mode, possibly slightly longer in multiplayer mode.

Granted, GTA London is fun for a short while, and the funky sixties music is pretty good, till you realise that what you're driving round, isn't exactly London. It's more like an American city, with various London place names slapped on. The London featured in GTA London doesn't look that much like London in 1969 or any other era. For a start, there are no curves or corners - the streets are decidedly square, like some big American city, and nothing like London. This may well be a limitation of the now aged GTA 1 engine, but it's a bit off-putting. Also slightly odd is the way that, while the game is set in 1969, none of the pedestrians seem to sport 1969 outfits or fashions, looking exactly like the characters in the original GTA. Even the characters that are supposedly football players look like the rest of the pedestrians - a little bit of character editing wouldn't have gone amiss.

Something else that could have been added to GTA to enhance the atmosphere would have been some more landmarks - as it stands, the whole city looks a little sparse. I don't know whether this could have been done with the GTA game engine, but it would have been something to be able to belt along the streets of London, past actual recognisable locations rather than the five or so bland looking 'landmarks' featured in the game (Tower Bridge's bridge doesn't even raise or lower, for flips sake). And as for the voices in the in-game cutscenes - oh dear - they're amateurish to say the least. The bloke doing the voices of the Crisp twins (a thinly disguised and very poor Kray brothers impression) was utterly crap - even the most muffled and monotonous railway announcement would have more charisma.

GTA London may well have sounded like a good idea on paper, but in practice it's rather disappointing. The sixties-themed cars are okay, even if they're altered so as to deflect legal action from the manufacturers' names. But once you start playing you realise that the 'London' in the game is nothing like the real London, and that you've seen all this before. Add to that the fact that the game is quite short and has only 1/4 of the maps of the original game, and you've got an expansion pack that doesn't come up to scratch. . Unfortunately, as it stands, GTA London isn't really worth stopping for - you're better of picking up GTA 2 if you want some top down car-nicking accent or go the full 3D route and pick up Grand Theft Auto 4 or Saints Row 2.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      worth a few quid

A nice little add on pack to the first GTA that helped feed the thirst for violence in the average gamers mind whilst GTA2 was being made.

These new missions take place in the city of London where you will be able to drive around some of your favourite tourist destinations whilst on your way to rob a bank or sort out some local gangsters.

The graphics, sound and gameplay are pretty much identical to the first game, which isn't a bad thing if you follow the motto of "if it ain't broken, don't fix it". There are a variety of new cars which are only really there for aesthetic purposes because the cars only real two attributes in this game as speed and cornering. This makes it hard for new cars to have their own unique driving styles.

Overall this game is basically GTA with a cockney paint job. Loved by those who loved the original and still hated by those who think this level of crime in a game is disgusting.

highyl recommended to fans of the original game

Released back in 1999, 'Grand Theft Auto: London 1969' is the first official expansion pack for the original (and best) GTA game, so rather than the admittedly swish-looking, style-over-content visuals of the later GTA games, players are instead treated to very simple top-down low-res graphics that resemble a 90s amiga game rather than a modern PC game.

As with the original however the graphics are perfectly suited as the gameplay itself is as good as ever, this time casting you as part of a crime gang carrying out carjackings, assassinations, heists and the like as before but this time at the back-end of the swinging sixties and surrounded by cockenys and british bobbies that are imagined in the way that only Americans who have never been to England could think were accurate shouting things like "you're nicked!' and 'you're brown bread!' in ridiculously over-the-top accents.

Its an inventive take on the original, and there are dozens of new maps and vehicles to explore, the whole game having been given a complete visual overhaul, and is definitely worth picking up as it gives the original game a new boost of life whilst retaining the same excellent game mechanics and darkly humourous and over-the-top style.

Great game must play if love gta

This game was more of an add on to the original grand theft auto game. You needed the original for it to work. Obviously the setting for the game was London and therefore you got to drive on roads that looks more like british roads than american. Also the cars where different, you could even drive a big red bus. The was basically the same gameplay as the original where you had to carry out missions to get a certain amount of points and then when you have enough points to can progress to the next level. When you progress a level you get a cut scene from a boss ganster. One quote I remember was "Your the monkey and I am the cheese grater". The music in the game was different as well. Also the words spoken in the game were more london based. This is a great expansion pack a must play.

GTa's will always be an interesting game. This one is not an exception

Another version of the grand theft auto saga. This version was not quite as publicised as the rest but is, nonetheless, a great game to play.
Grand theft auto London 1969, tries to display the reality of London at the end of the 60s. The city is somewhat similar to its real world counterpart although it is far from being a carbon copy of the real city. Most of the neighborhoods are correctly located though.
The game has very week graphics, worse than GTA1 but the logic of the mission and functionalities are very similar.
In terms of gameplay, GTA is without a doubt, the fastest GTA available. The movement of the character is very fast and specially cars (specially cars such as the james Bomb) can go from one end of the city to the other in less than a couple of minutes).
The missions are very interesting (and quite similar to those in GTA) and all the british expressions are there (The cops say "you're nicked" when you get caught for instance). Also go to hyde park cos you'll find a nice tank there ;)

      Stay away

If you didn't enjoy GTA or GTA2 skip this and go straight to GTA3.

There's nothing new about GTA London other than that it's set in London. Really, that's it. You still have the same awkward overhead view, the same awful shooting controls, the same wandering around a boring city hoping you recall the layout and that you don't die immediately because ofthe awful shooting style.

If you're hoping to see how GTA progressed to GTA3 through GTA2 and GTA London let me warn you, you're not going to see it so don't waste your time on any GTA games earlier than GTA3 unless you're a fan of the old classics. The style of play is completely different and whilst this could be acceptable there are far too many flaws which prevent it from being so, least of all that there's no strong storyline and the game isn't interesting. Just leave it alone.

        Disadvantages

GRAND THEFT AUTO : LONDON 1969 ------------------------------ Now most people have probably heard of the Grand theft auto series of games, made popular by the 3d efforts of GTA3 and Vice City, but before these 3d masterpieces there were 3 other games, yep there was GTA1 and 2, then there was this little number released as an add on disc for GTA1. This add-on pack was released in 1999, and was created by DMA designs(who were later to be known as Rockstar) these were famous for bringing the Lemmings games to our screens. When GTA 1 was first released there was a lot of controversy about the game, mainly due to the amount of killing and joyriding that you do, this was even talked about in the houses of parliament, so imagine the looks on these peoples faces when they found out that the next game was being set in their own backyard! So, the basic idea of the original game was that you are a small time crook, trying to get yourself known in the world of crime, this was done by doing odd jobs for certain gang members, these were basically kill someone or take someone to a certain place, and sadly not a lot has changed since that game, this is pretty much more of the same. Personally I have loved every GTA game when released, but fairly shortly they seem to loose a bit of the fun, once you've done a few missions you have seen pretty much all there is to see. GAMEPLAY -------- Well as with the original, this was before the use of 3d effects and other such gimmicky tricks, so this was left to the gameplay to prove itself. Viewed from above the car, you look down on the action, a bit like watching the car from an helicopter, when the character is walking around, or driving a slow car the camera zooms quite close up, but if you get in a fast car the camera zooms far out so you can see the whole road ahead, leading to some quite breathtaking police chases. So the basic idea
of the game is the same as the original, you must complete jobs for certain criminals, these can be quite simple, such as taking a criminal to a hotel, or they can get quite difficult like killing an armed gangster, whilst being chased by hundreds of policemen all baying for your blood. As in the original, most missions are got by answering a certain phone, but once you start to get a bit of a reputation you will sometimes get some through your pager, or by meeting a gangster. The main problem is that although these missions are quite varied, they do tend to get a bit boring after a while, this is something I've found with each release of the GTA series, although to a lesser extent on the later games. So as I have said a few times, this is very similar to the original, so whats new, well there are 36 new missions, and 30 new vehicles to drive around in, and then of course theres the fact that its set in London. That's about it really, it doesn't add a lot, but it does give the game a fresh feel if your a bit bored of the original. The vehicles are all based on cars from the late 60's although none of the names are correct due to copyright issues. Each car has its own different handling and speed, some can really move but if you knock the direction a little then you will go veering of the road quicker than you can say "Where did the road go" Whereas some of the vehicles are so slow its not even worth bothering with, the pedestrians walk faster than your car. Other vehicles include motorbikes and mopeds, which are great but you will find you fall of quite often. London busses, these are nice for a laugh. There is also the car used in the Austin Powers movies, y'know the one with the Union Jack on it. And of course as in any GTA game, there is the TANK! yep the tank is in here, there is a bright pink one that i have found, but from what I know they come in all manner of different colours. T
here is a nice amount of secrets in this game, but again that is something that is to be expected from a GTA game. The Kill frenzies are your ordinary kill a set amount in a certain time limit, if you complete these you get a bonus of some kind. As with the rest of the series, this game can be played pretty much how you want, you can take a few missions, in any order, or you could just race around the place killing people and blowing things up, its up to you! The layout is a nice version of London, although there does seem to be a lack of bends or roundabouts, but these have never really been put into GTA games. GRAPHICS -------- These are obviously nothing in comparison to the later games, but they do what they need, they are fast and clear. One of the biggest differences between this and the original is the use of colour, in the first game the colours were bright and cartoony, whereas this offering seems a bit more grimy and dark, more in the vain of GTA2, but maybe that's their impression of London. The cars are all very clearly drawn and look very smart, and the surroundings are quite detailed and offer a good idea of where its set. The main characters and pedestrians are a bit on the small side though, and this does make it more difficult to really get as involved, and sometimes it is quite hard to tell what direction your character is facing, which isn't very good if you've got a bunch of coppers on your tail. DIFFICULTY ---------- This game is fairly short, and isn't too hard to get into, the controls will sometimes let you down a bit, but this makes it frustrating but not really difficult. Some of the timed missions are quite tight, but if you put your foot down you should make them. Other than that it is quite a simple game. OVERALL ------- As this is an add-on disc you do need to own the original, but the two games have been nicely packaged together f
or the small sum of 4.99, so it really isn't to big a deal. And anyway, why wouldn't you want the original? Also if you have an Internet connection, and if your reading this then you must have, then there is another add-on pack available from Rockstar games which is free to download from their site, which is set in London 1961, this is actually more fun than the 1969 one. So do i recommend this? Of course i do, if you haven't got the GTA games then you really should try them, unless your under 18 of course, and as I stated at 4.99 for the two games it really isn't breaking the bank. Or you could just steal a car, drive down the pavement until you find a computer games store, run in with a machine gun and just Steal it! Only joking before someone actually does as I say!! Thanks for reading. Please leave any comments you may have. Kyle

If you were a fan of the original then this game is a must.Tired of driving the same old American muscle cars that were the only option of the first installment? Then grab a copy of this and prepare to be whisked back to 1969 and bring the atmosphere of a gangster ridden London to your screen! Drive Mini Coopers, E Type Jags and of course the VW Bugs that have become a classic of this series. There is the same addiction level to this game as the original only ,i think ,this time its more fun.The game has an 18 rating mind so its only for the more mature gamer , the usual curses and swearing are even more so this time around. The only down side to this game i think is that the graphics could have possibly been more 'polished' than they are, especially since fans of the first game were eagerly awaiting the next installment of this classic series.

You may have guessed.. I'm a tad sceptical. It's a cash in I'm afraid. London does not have straightline streets like America, so why does it have them in this game? It's basically a blatant cash in.. all they've done is take the old game and change the textures over. Why bother? It's the same old formula again... race around a city viewed from a top-down perspective and steal cars to improve your ranking in the 'criminal underworld'. The usual easy-to-kill pedestrians who seem to be there only for the purpose of killing them. All god fun of course.... Overall, it's ok, but it is a cash in.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Set in London in 1969, the game works on a number of levels. Alongside the predictably aggresive gameplay, the game attempts to show the seductive but ultimately destructive glamour of a life of crime to a street hoodlum drawn progressively further into a nightmare criminal underworld of theft, killing, drugs, extortion and prostitution. At the same time the game is a parody of all the great British films and TV series of the 1960s and 1970s. The player starts as a criminal looking for work. He soon finds it. Finally, he comes under the wings of the legendary Crisp Twins, London's most feared siblings. London can be yours, but as betrayal and brutality engulf your world, you've got to keep a level head, and keep driving a smart motor. Or you'll have your head kicked in. Featuring the hippest sounds, cool cats, and the hottest transport since Challenger, Grand Theft Auto London also features some of London's most famous landmarks and most embarrassing memories. Mods, hippies, old school crims and the police all attempt to deal with a corrupt judiciary, addled aristocracy and a host of new social problems, fresh to England's once peaceful shores. Buy the game it's great.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Those of you who were just about used to driving on the right hand side in GTA thought that it couldn't get any more complicated....then came along GTA London! Driving on the left-hand side doesn't seem so confusing in real life, but if you are used to playing the original style then it's quite hard to adapt to. The game itself is great fun though, as you get the chance to see the sights of London (Buckingham Palace, Big Ben), whilst taking part in the every day activities of London (stealing cars, punching people, blowing up tourist attractions, that sort of thing)! The aim of the game is pretty much the same as that in GTA, steal cars, complete missions, run from the police, etc. so it is not too hard to adapt to in that sense. The old style cars can be a bit annoying too if you don't have a game editor, as the cars are mostly very slow and extremely dull to drive. But the police are also reasonably hopeless, as they drive around aimlessly trying to catch you for petty crimes. They don't have the intelligence that is found in the police on GTA2, so the game is quite easy to play. The graphics are just as good as in GTA, although it's a pity that some of the faster cars weren't included in GTA London. Still, it's a great game, as are all of the GTA series of games, so if you can't make your mind up which one to get, why don't you get all three! Then you won't get bored too quickly, as there is plenty of variety in all of them.

This game deserves respect! This is a great follow up to GTA! I like it most because it is a bit nearer to home (being living in England). The graphics are spot on and I think the sound quility is great. The thing I like most is that unlike GTA, the cars are not all fast. The suroundings of the game .EG. Hyde Park are as good as you are going to get to the real one. This is also why I like the game soo much. I got addicted to this game as I did to the first GTA. I am looking forward to buying GTA2 when I get the chance. Maybe i'll be just as addicted!

The game has to be one of the best games I’ve ever played I have never seen a game which is so gripping and this is about the only game I’ve played which doesn’t let me leave the computer this game is full of action but you do need a little practice driving the cars as the handling is quite hard but once you have go the hang of the game you won’t stop playing it and you’ll try and play it wherever you can. The sequel will be another cracker
