Advantages: Varied gameplay, collectables and cheap price
Disadvantages: Not really replayable
I bought this game when it first came out, so paid more than you would today, however for the time it was definitely worth the money and would be worth paying £2 for still. Playing Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets on the PC was a very fun experience, as although it was made quite a while ago, it still manages to be a pretty decent computer game.
The game focuses around the story of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets film. It does stray away from the plot quite a lot, but overall it does manage to stick to it quite well, and it's probably best that it does as games that stick to the film are never as good as they could be. I believe it is rated at 7 plus, due to the fact that younger kids might find it scary, as they may have done with the film itself.
The controls are really easy to use throughout, as generally the keyboard is used to control Harry and then the mouse is used to cast the spells. However, for those who prefer using different keys or controls for controlling characters, there is always the handy option of changing them to suit your preferences.
You play as Harry, and you must follow him through the various adventures he gets into it whether it be on Hogwarts school grounds, classrooms or the Chamber of Secrets itself, your responsible for making sure Harry does all of his missions to the best of his ability. The storyline does go pretty quickly, and the missions do correspond with each other, each increasing with difficulty as you go along, but they never get too difficult that it becomes a struggle to complete them.
Throughout the game, you will learn spells from different teachers that Harry has encountered and these can be used in your challenges to either finish the mission, get to a secret passageway or unlock something. All of the spells you use are pretty varied, from Wingdardium Leviosa to one that's name I always forget, but it makes whatever floor your standing on really springy!
However, the gameplay did only take me a couple of hours to complete, but maybe for younger people who are interested in Harry Potter, they may take a bit longer to complete it. When you are finished, there is also the option of being able to play through the spell challenges, and this can be extremely fun when you are trying to go as fast as you can to beat your previous score! Once I'd finished the game though, I did have a bit of added on gametime by trying to collect all of the Wizard Cards and upgrading my broom and quidditch gear to the highest quality.
The only problem I found was that with the game, once it was finished you couldn't go back and replay any of the levels. So if I ever wanted to play something again, I'd have to start from the very beginning and then lose all my previous progress. For the casual gamer, this would be a great game though, as you could roam the halls of Hogwarts to look for the hidden bonuses like extra cards or beans or just talk to the random people running around the halls.
The graphics are decent for this computer game, and the scenes resemble what the film looks like with all the halls and chamber of secrets matching the design. Everything is well detailed, and I have yet to have experienced a glitch while playing it. The sounds correspond with what the character does, as when Harry jumps to a ledge he makes sounds, you can hear his footsteps when you are running and when casting a spell it always alerts you with what you can imagine a wand would sound like.
I would recommend this game to any Harry Potter fan who is looking for an easy, simple to use and quick game to play. For the experienced gamer, it is probably not the best option as it is likely that they will finish it in a few amount of hours and there are much better games to suit their needs. This game is decent for its cheap price though, so if your budget is limited, invest in this!
Summary: Good game for a couple of hours, limited replay
