Advantages: Brilliant games. Great graphics, sound & gameplay. Easy to learn the controls

Disadvantages: None really worth mentioning

If you’re after a good first person shooter but like to use your wits at the same time, look no further than Hidden & Dangerous as it will test you to the limit! It’s one of the best first person shooters on the market and a brilliant strategy game at the same time and worthy of the accolades that it has been given.

This opinion is going to cover Hidden & Dangerous and it’s add-on mission pack, Fight For Freedom and I hope that I can do the game justice, as it is a very good game.

Hidden & Dangerous

As I said at the start of this opinion, this is both a first person shooter and a strategy game rolled into one. Have Take 2/Talonsoft got it right? Yes they have and hopefully they will produce more of this type of game.

Plot.

The plot sees you in World War II, with all the weapons and vehicles that were around at the time. There’s nothing but historical stuff for you to use here so don’t be looking for the microwave gun to fry the Nazis with! The missions are all set in Europe and see you taking out airfields, destroying harbours, ambushing German Officers, Infiltrating German camps, rescuing your men and other allies and a lot more besides! There’s plenty of missions and plenty of variation between the missions to keep you happy for months if not longer.

The basic idea of the game is that you have to complete all of the missions to win the war. Each mission leads to the next mission and that’s the way the war goes. At the start you have to pick your men, a total of 8 altogether. There’s quite a lot of people to choose from and all have their strengths and weaknesses so look through them all and choose your team wisely! After you choose your men you have to kit each one out with weapons and supplies which will help them to complete the mission. Again, there’s plenty to choose from and they all have their good and bad points. You have to choose the right wea
pons for the right people to get the most out of both.
The next screen takes you to the mission briefing, which is very detailed. You need to pay attention here so that you know what your objectives are for the mission! You can replay the briefing as many times as you want before moving on to deployment. Just make sure you know what your objectives are.

Gameplay.

Gameplay is very good indeed and the cutscenes are excellent (I have plenty of screenshots that I use for my desktop wallpaper!). Controlling your men is very simple and can be done in two ways. The first way is by the use of hot keys, which help you to get your men into the right fights. The second way is brilliant and lets you set your men in the right positions and using the right weapons for the job in hand. The second option also allows you to set waypoints and much, much more. This all goes to make the game even more enjoyable for you.

The graphics are very good as are the sounds and make the best use of your graphics card and soundcard. The cutscenes are a joy to watch and if you’re not tempted for a few screenshots whilst watching the cutscenes I will be very surprised!

Control is via mouse and keyboard and is both responsive and easy to learn. It will take you a while to remember which key does which command but a short while into the game you will have the majority of the key commands off to a tee.

The weapons are those that were around during WWII and there’s a fair amount of choice here. You’ve got everything from knives, machine guns & sniper rifles to tanks, motorbikes, boats & armoured cars. Basically there’s everything to make you feel as if you were there.

The game plays well on a middle of the road PC. (Roughly: PII 300, 64MB RAM & all the other usual stuff.) The cutscenes are very enjoyable to watch and the movement of the characters is smooth.

In all, that’s what Hidden & Dangerous is
like.

Read on to see what Fight For Freedom is like.

Fight For Freedom.

Now to tell you a bit about Fight For Freedom, which is the add-on mission pack for Hidden & Dangerous.

The graphics have been slightly improved and tweaked top give better performance. The sound is the same and is a delight.
Gameplay and controls are basically the same as in H & D. In all the only thing that has changed between the two games are some of the men that you can choose from, the weapons that you can use and the missions themselves.

The missions are set in the likes of Greece this time or somewhere like that. You are up against Partisans this time, since the war is over in Europe.

You have to fight your way through mountains that have snipers all around the place, Roman ruins that have the partisans waiting to ambush you & a few other locations. Again the plot is very good and a lot of time and effort has gone into making Fight For Freedom. It’s time and effort well spent if you ask me!

You get a few new weapons, which are Russian machine guns really and some small arms of other types to reflect that you are fighting Partisans.

Again the game plays very well and is a joy to play! It is still a hard game to complete and you will get months of fun out of Fight For Freedom!

That’s my lot for this double opinion, but keep your eyes peeled for more games reveiws coming real soon.

Thanks for taking the time to read my opinion.

Regards to you all………..Paddy (Tom)

Nice op, but I find it hard to believe you didn't run into some of the many bugs this game still has!

MY opinion thanks Cookie. I use the same username on both Ciao & Dooyoo. That way no-one can accuse me of copying. There's not really a lot of money to be made from either to be honest, but it certainly gets addictive. There's a lot of people from Ciao that are members of DooYoo & vice versa. I actually e-mailed DooYoo to check that having the two accounts was ok.

Thanks for reading my op. I love games & intend to put as many useful ops on computers, components, books & magazines as I can. I try to write as best as I can & hopefully my scrawlings will help people make the right decision. I build computers, repair them & teach people how to use them better. The pennies from DooYoo & Ciao will give my 4 kids some extra stuff at Chistmas or if anyof them have a chance of a school trip[, to the likes of London or Ameria. My daughters' school has links with some American schools & assossiations and when the kids are in years 6 & 7 they get the chance to spend 6 weeks with an American family.

Hope that answers your question & again thanks for reading & rating my writings.
